Flowmasters?

Flowmasters?
I am sick and tired of having a huge coffee can muffler slapped on the back of my RS and it actually is ugly. I like to gain power yet can't afford to shell out the 450+ for the catback. Any thoughts about grabbing a Flowmaster muffler and just getting a mild steel pipe ran all the way the the cat? Will I be asking for trouble with this setup or will it be safe? I know it will rust but I figure if this lasts me for about a year or so till I can get something worthy its worth it. Anyone try though a flowmaster muffler or something similar? Any advice would be great. Thanks

Just because you are not shelling out 300+ extra bucks for a specific name doesn't mean you are going to get crap. Usually that is the case, but not when it comes to mufflers. It is just a muffler and as long as it is a high flow muffler, gains are not going to vary much between them even if you buy one that is $1000. It is a noise reduction box and depending on what sound you want, then that is what you will get. Flowmaster has a muffler that sounds deep on 4cyl. imports. If you want a more non-rice sound get a 40series. It will last you as long as any other muffler and give you about the same gains. You might even like the sound more, since it will be unique compared to what everyone else has.

Instead of mild steel go with aluminized. It's not that expensive, around $4-7 a foot and you will need around 7 ft. if you don't run a resonator. Personally, I recommend a resonator to quiet things down but I don't know what your tastes are. I like the Magnaflow mufflers the best, just my opinion.

EDIT: I just found a place here in VA that sells aluminized 2.25" for $2.50 a foot.

I crave the deep sound but I want to stay away from the tingy sound if possible though. I was going to do some sort of piping back but don't want the tingy sound though. Another question is what will happen if I just pipe all the way back to headers? am I asking for more trouble than I need if i take out my cat? Will this toast my low end torque?
Another vote for Magnaflow
I started out with Brullen headers (including high flow cat), mild steel midpipe, mild steel Flo-Pro muffler (not at all related to Flowmaster). Nice power gains, loud and rumbly at idle, but too tinny at any revs at all. Chopped off the Flo-Pro, welded on a Magnaflow SS. Now I've got all the power gains and great sound to redline. Very affordable and no rust yet.

Well I finally got a Flowmaster muffler. I chose the 40 series muffler w/ out the Delta Flow. I have to say I am impressed with this muffler. On the inside of the car it sounds definately sporty yet quite deep. On the outside it is nothing but burly sounding. I just can't wait till I can cat back it with no resonators and some borla headers complemented with a high flow cat from random tech!

exhaust loudness (noise)
Un-modified cats and a glasspack will keep things quiet. Headers, Hi-flow cat, no resonator, and aftermarket muffler = intrusive to say the least. Not to knock on Flowmaster, but I heard they flow like crap. I forget what series, but it was either 40's or 60's flowed only 372 cfm compared to Walkers Ultra flow SS 900 cfm with 2.25" piping. I wish I had the source. If it sounds good to you, great!

At first it sounded sporty inside but it seems to be getting deeper and deeper. I personally like the deep sound myself and anything to get away from the coffee can effect. Just doay i had a guy at a light look at my car and ask me what kind of exhaust I had. When I told him it was a flowmaster he looked confused and said it sounded good outside. I have gotten nothing but complements about the sound outside. They say it sounds nothing like most exhausts. I just can't wait till I have this thing cat-backed
To me the sound is not intrusive but I usually have the stereo on and up. I am not sure how to explain it other than it is just plain deep. Engine braking makes it real deep but on the outside i guess it sounds incredibly different with a more rumbling sound. I don't think the Delta Flow would make it too quiet. I am not real familiar with the Delta Flow techonology, but from my understanding it mainly gets rid of a lot of the interior resonance making it more peaceful. It doesn't really take hardly anything away from exterior resonance though. Here are a couple links. First one shows 40 series with Delta Flow and second shows 40 series without the Delta Flow. Hope this helps out. Hopefully I can get a sound clip of it to help out soon.

I finally did a long drive in the car today with a flowmaster muffler on and yes it is quite intrusive and I can only imagine how intrusive it will be with a cat back and headers and all that stuff. The sound is quite deep and at times after a few hours in the car it is time to pull over and pop the ears. Its a good sound and is not the pissed off weed eater sound like hondas. There is a gurgling sound at start up and at low RPM's which i love. I still need to get a sound clip and stop being a slacker
