Erratic Idle - P0106 Code ??

Car Info: 3 Subarus, 2 VW Vanagons w/ Subaru engines
Erratic Idle - P0106 Code ??
I have a '99 Impreza RS - the fist year of the SOHC 2.5L and the one with the MAF sensor vs the MAP sensor that came on later models.
The engine seems to run well with with throttle but the idle is erratic, not smooth, like it should be....
It has symptoms of a vacuum leak...suring up and down a little bit..sometimes slowing down enough to almost die...but it doesn;t
It also seems to be running a little rich...tail pipe sooted up.
Getting MIL / CEL Code: P0106 -- "Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit /Range/Performance Problem"
I think this refers to the pressure sensor located in the engine bay in front of the passenger side shock tower. Is this right?
Checked tubing from intake manifold to the atmospheric pressure sensor... seems OK...
Appreciate any help.
