05 Wrx Question

hello all.

This past sunday I had purchased a 2005 wrx 5 spd (not an STI) and it already had the Injen installed.

It currently has 14k miles on it. After driving the vehicle for a block or two the idle starts to bounce up and down between 400-1000 once or twice then finally goes back to noral @ 800-1k rpm. <---when i get to a red light or stop sign.

Now...Could this be the intake or just how the engine is? Your comments are greatly appreciated.

from reading around the forums it seems that this intake is pretty common for someone just to put on as a first mod.

I can see how alot of you would shun such a mod and i couldn't agree more with you. intakes (especially CIA) are about as good as an NA car with a 3" exhaust. Useless.

Im thinking the length and lag of the setup is whats making my engine idle funky whenever i stop.

If I were to go to a dealer and request a stock air box. How much do you think it would run?

And from what i read here. It should fix my problem.

Comments are still very welcome.

Cheers.

I'm not positive this will work but I would start by cleaning the MAF sensor.

fan-freakin-tastic.

Thanks man. I will surely try that. Im used to NA vehicles and just throwin some throttle body cleaner in there and cleanin it every couple months. but never the sensor itself. i shall try that.

Thanks. I'll be sure to let you know if it works.

Even if the cleaning works it would be a good idea to ditch the cai when you get the $ for a new airbox. You might be able to find a used one on the forums.

BTW, make sure the cleaner is safe on plastic. I've heard good things about this http://www.midwayautosupply.com/deta...tion.asp?19596 and I think NAPA carries it.

good luck

Congrats on your new car.The last owner was probably ignorant and
didn't know that aftermarket CAI's are NOT a good mod for are cars.
That Ingen CAI is what is probably making your idle alittle funny.
Your car I bet is not tuned for the Ingen CAI even then your car
can run lean running aftermarket CAI's on your car witch is horrible
(lean condition). The stock oem airbox flows the perfect amount of
CFM's.You should purchase a stock oem airbox when you can.
I honestly hate it when people put aftermarket CAI's on a Subaru.
The stock oem airbox is a CAI.

Thank you very much guys for the replys. I just emailed renick subaru for price and lead time on a stock air box. I've installed intake on many cars. Mostly nissans and you can tell a huge difference on turbo cars when somethin is fu*ked. and the first thing that popped in my head was the intake. that pipe is pretty darn skinny and pretty long.

Im sure the air box has its length but also has the higher box volume to makes things idle right. (well duh, thats why it comes with the car heh )

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it works out.

Here is the charge: Should I go with it? Or is there a place online I can get for cheaper. I'm the kinda guy who will pay a little more just to go get it down the street than wait for it to come in the mail.

Hello,

We can order this for you. If you need all the pieces for the airbox
set up
you would need the following:

Upper case half - $107.22
Lower case half - $102.23
Air Filter - $14.95
Bushing (X2) - $2.05
Spacer (X2) - $1.26
Screw (X2) $.20

also if you need the silencer that is in the fender well that is
separate
and sells for $65.87

Ouch. Over $200 for that is pretty steep, or at least it seems steep to me. I'd check out the local classifieds here to see if someone has a used one they will sell.

I just checked ebay, and found one here with no bids, but 7 days left on the auction. You could probably get it for a lot cheaper than buying a new one:

Get the SPT intake. It keeps factory warrenty and is CARB legal. Only like $165. I have heard that it is one of the best intakes you can by, plus it is by Subaru SPT.

You should just get all the parts from your local Subaru parts dept.
you mite be paying alittle more but, you will get all the parts you need.
I checked my local Subaru Dealership today and the price you got was
only $5-10 more than I got since prices on parts are different in certain
areas and prices go up and down every month.
If you want to you could install a K/N air filter in your new stock oem
airbox instead of the restrictive stock paper air filter.

Don’t skip the MAF sensor cleaning. If the guy that owned the car before you over oiled the filter there could be oil on the sensor. If there is oil on the sensor it could make the car idle funny.

Do an air box search in the classified section and you will find stuff like this https://www.i-club.com/forums/showth...hlight=air+box
