My mom's 98 legacy (ej25) has had engine clatter ever since I wrecked it. No idea what it's from, no performance loss as far as I can tell (I don't drive it a lot, but it's been 20K miles. Also, my brother in law's Audi 100 quattro just got it's engine clatter fixed and I think the diagnosis was something with the lifters.

how many miles are on it?
and yes the 2.5 is known to tap and click more than other motors because it has solid lifter than need to be adjusted about 100k miles or so but if you have less than that it could be the tensioner

2.5 RS motors have roller rockers with no lifters. However they have two rocker ganged together which makes adjustments difficult and when the cams and valves start to wear it's real difficult to keep them quiet.
Mine clatter like crazy, but I installed COBB cams in mine.
Piston Slap is something that is popular also. With this H4 it'll sound like valve train noise, but it could be piston slap.

its piston slap, EVERY 2.5 with over 50K has it, its not bad, in fact most all subaru engines will develop it, accept for the 2.2, because of the longer piston skirts, my master tech at my work says it will still go forever. so no worries
