Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

One spot we frequented had this fine silt that made it's way past the stock paper filter and collected on the throat of the carb. I told one of my friends about it and he recommended a K&N drop-in, so I tried it. After that no more silt. In fact I never found anything on the carb throat anymore. That made me a believer. I'm also not to concerned about the 3.13% difference in filtration between the AC and the K&N filters. Especially with my Suby which sees alot less dirt then the FJ40 did. I'm more concerned with flow.

It's unfortunate that the K&N's mess with MAP's in WRX's, but I've had a K&N drop-in on my CAI equipped '04 RS for over 35k miles with no problems.

Oh, I understand. I raced dirt (bikes and cars) and swore by K&N. I have used them in every car I have owned since they have been out, including my Range Rover (with a full Borla exhaust system, no less ~ that's how I roll).

But I had my K&N factory oiled (not a re-oil) cover my MAF with a thin oil layer, which gave me a lean condition and hence detonation at light loads. Cleaned the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner ~ threw in the HKS foam drop in and end of problems!

I don't have it handy... it's the same as the new 350Z. I think I just Googled 'HKS' and found a Suby dealer in SoCal that had them in stock!

This is not where I got it... but it's the same piece!

You can PM me and I have an extra one at home (at work right now) and I can read the part # off it as well! This filter list as up to '05 ~ but as far as I can tell (just lifted a hood on an '06 here at work) it's the same unit!

Talking Hks

Put it in this morning, was not expecting results but, I think they are there, definately more sound at WOT. I am a hesitant to think there are gains, but shoot, I think they are there with the HKS...

Thursday we had our 20th car in 2 years pull into the service bay with another MAF sensor fouled by oil ~ the car wouldn't idle, coughed and bucked... the owner was in a panic, all he could see was $$$ signs.

This was a 'factory oiled' K&N with 5,000 miles on the filter. Cleaned the inside of the intake hose which was coated with film, shot the MAF twice with electrical contact cleaner and dropped in an STI paper. $150 later he was smiling and had an STI again!

I have a K&N with about half a charge kit left... if anyone is still a non-beliver of K&N MAF fouling ~ I'll sell for REAL cheap! I am on the HKS and quite happy with my choice.

Exclamation K&N = problems (at least for me)

OK, here's my story: I replaced the filter on my 2005 Impreza RS with a K&N (stock airbox), and after 70km, I got a CEL and blinking Cruise light, poor iddle and weird knocking noises...
Had to clean the sensor with contact cleaner, put an EOM filter and disconnect the battery for these problems to go away.
But the car did feel zippier with the K&N filter, not more powerfull but more responsive.

Just put in a K&N for my '02 TS wagon. Hopefully I won't have problems with the MAF sensor like others. I looked at the HKS ones, but it doesn't look like they make one for an NA Subie in my year, only the WRX's. Anybody know of an alternative to the K&N for my car other than the stock paper filter or a FRAM one? I couldn't find any myself, hence the purchase of the K&N.

does anyone here know if that HKS foam filter will fit in the stock air box of a 96 impreza with the 1.8L. I'm pretty sure it does, but I just wanted to confirm before I purchased it

I previously ran a K&N cone filter before the MAF sensor and I noticed that it became clogged with the red oil. I threw the stock air box back in but I want a better filter besides the usual cheapo FRAM.
