why would you want to downgrade like that? think of it...the dohc makes the same amount of horse as your sohc...so subaru must be doing somthing right...not to mention the head gasket issue..sohcs blow them alot less then dohcs....im sure its possible to do it, but it would be pointless
If you really insist of getting a DOHC swap, why don't you go for the previous models engine and do an engine swap. Like AWDimprezaL said, the head gasket is a problem. For me, I would rather spend the money to get more mods for the car and not get a dohc that gets me in trouble more than the sohc. Thats just my .02
This has been covered on other forums. Its all about how big of an engine your doin. If you keeping it mostly stock then stay with the SOHC. But, if your gonna build the hell out of the engine then the DOHC will take more abuse. Thats what all the big time subie racers are doing. Im going through the same thing. I have a 01 and am gonna build the motor and go with some V7 JDM heads tweeked a bit. So, if your really not going to get real nuts with the engine then stick with the SOHC and upgrade those. I hear they take mods pretty well. They flatline if your over 450hp.
