2.5 DOHC engine swap Q's
Allo All,
I have a 98 RS with a blown 2.5 DOHC that needs replacing. I am a poor bastard and i owe 8 grand on the car so i need to get out of this cheap cheap. I was wondering if any of you out there have swaped out their 2.5 DOHC for something else. I need to know what other blocks fit, (I have the phase I engine with a 4 bolt bellhousing) using the same transmision (standard) without any mods to tranny and hopefully same clutch. I understand that I will probably have to buy a new ECU/Harness and that's cool. I just wanted to hear everyone elses experiences. Thanks All... Jason

I think I'd go that route too. It may or may not be as cheap as a straight swap, but even building it with good forged components won't be too awful, plus you can do some stuff like get better head gaskets, O-ring them, heck, even bore it out a little. At least it would give you the chance to start planning out how and what you do with it.

I think you need to let us know what happened before you can get straight advice, especially if you're on a budget.
I had my head gaskets blow, and I thought I was looking at a new engine. I had a competent and honest mechanic do a head gasket job, and top end rebuild (blueprinted heads), and it runs great!!

yes its best to due a rebuild, I have checked up on an engine swap on the 2.5 RS , it was going to cost almost 1300 in just the wiring alone(total of 18 hours) So I would definetly stick with a rebuild or unless you can come up with lot of cash.

Yes, you can swap the new STi drivetrain into any Impreza, and probably a Legacy too, bt it's not simple. Should not require any fabrication though, just a lot of part swapping (and money!).

And it's a GC6 with the stock motor. Putting an EJ20T in it would make it a GC8. See the last page or 2 of the FAQ.
