COBB Intake
I'm pretty noob at performance mods, so if I sound like an ***, sorry. Hopefully you guys can explain this stuff to me. I've been looking at COBB's cold air intake system along with the cat-black system in the stage 1 power package for a 04-05 rs (I'm gonna be buying in 05, so I might go new, might go used with a 04).
Now, their intake it pulls air from the front fender right? So, would this or any other intake make use of a hood scoop? For the cat-black exhaust how does this actually boost your power?
Also, do these mods put any strain on your engine or do they actually reduce strain?
Last noobish question: will performance mods like this void your car's warranty?
thanks

exhaust and intake sounds
howdy, i have an 02 2.5rs, and would like to get an exhaust system and intake. Im interested in getting either the Borla Cat backs, or the Stromung Cat backs.
which one is louder and deeper???
also with the Stromung, i think only the muffler is included, would that sound nice without headers or other pipes?
how much does it cost to have headers installed??

basically yes and no to the warranty, if something in that aspect breaks then you voided the warranty and they wont fix it.
an intake that uses the hood scoop is one thats called the gravelsport intake(priced at about 300 bucks). There is fear of hyrdolock with it having chances of sucking in water.
im guessing still the 05 wont have a hoodscoop so you will need to source a wrx hood
id fear from buying direct from cobb
uh on the strain? i mean yes and no topic again

Those sort of mods should place less strain on the engine, as the engine is doin less work than it would do with the factory parts, your engine will be more efficient, though on the down-side you will probably drive the car alot harder than when it was stock, which will put more strain on the engine.

Right on both parts but remember, More flow = more foreign objects in your engine.
That doesn't mean that you're going to blow your engine with a COBB CAI, it just means that you are letting more air in at the risk of allowing some dirt in.
BTW..I wouldn't do the gravelsports one anyhow. The miniscule Ram-air effect will but unnoticable at the rist of hydrolock in a really heavy downpour.

I wouldn't say that bolt-ons on a normally aspirated motor cause additional wear and tear.
The catback doesn't void anything. The intake is one of those things that they can claim voids part of the warranty, but in a SOHC EJ25, under the law they would have a very hard time proving that. Short answer is, no, they don't void the warranty. Remember, no single mod can void your entire warranty, only the portions of it that apply to that part.

The Stromung with midpipe costs about the same as the Borla with midpipe.
Installation of headers is really easy- if you have any experience at all working on cars I would do it myself. If not, it shouldn't be more than an hour's labor.

If it's raining so hard that it could hydrolock your motor, even with a GravelSport, you should have pulled over anyway. However, it is nowhere near worth the cost of converting to a WRX hood to run a $300 intake that you probably can't even get ahold of anyway.
Stick to Cobb if you can afford it.

Borla Cat backs come with super cheap clamps. stick to the power package from cobb. the CAI is awsome. The gravelsports is cool but if you get the packets from cobb it would be cheaper for all of it together and youd be happy cobb rules!
