I'm posting for an buddy of mine. I was wondering if there is a way to check the codes the cpu is throwing without a reader, ie like the 300zx with a flashing light?

you need an access port or a computer with the right software to read codes.

 

If you live near an Autozone store they will pull the code for free. They are not allowed to erase it ( unless they don't happen to see you do it behind their conveinently turned back...wink wink). If no Autozone try some other parts stores.
