Borla headers and broken welds
OK I have the newest version of the Borla header for the EJ25. When I first received it I talked about the crappy weld quality and the lack of porting away excess material on the inside of the piping where the piping meets the flange. Later I mentioned the poor fitment with the Borla header and how I've talked to several people who have had the same problem. Its almost as though the pieces weren't test fit on a pattern to make sure they fit correctly.
Dave Borla at the time said that the quality is great and that should there be any problem to send it back for repairs. Well it seems I'm at that point. After one month being on the car the POS welds on the piping have cracked. Now however I'm just going to pay out of pocket to have a local shop fix it rather then remove the piece to send it back to be have the welds fixed when they shouldn't have cracked to begin with.
If you buy the Borla header don't install the thing. Take it to a decent welding shop to have them redo all the welds on the header, add a support bracket to the header and test fit it to your car first so that they can make any adjustments that will be needed. It will save you the trouble of having to fix it later.
If your not going to a turbo application later on then get a different header all together.

hey what's up, i have a 95 legacy ls, and i was really looking at getting a borla header myself (2.2 l version though). anyone have any horror stories with this version? are both the 2.2 and 2.5 basically constructed the same using the same weld? after reading the story above i'm kind of iffy on all this now.

Quality sucks, yes, and there are no power gains. But its still the cheapest header route you can go. If there is ever a crack or broken weld, just take it in to a muflfer shop and have them fix the welds for $20 like N/A says, which Is what I did with the cracked used one I got for cheap and it runs just fine. If I had the money say for an MRT system, i'd get that rather than just these headers.

Well I call around and it seems everyone wants at least $50 to weld it back together. So I'm going to pay $75 for another shop to fix the welds and add a support bracket to the header. I probably would have paid $20 at least to ship the damn thing back to Borla anyways.

As I suggested before, please take advantage of our warranty. Call 877-GO-BORLA and ask for customer service.
Manufacturing variances are not uncommon. Most manufacturers continually monitor their production procedures in order to separate the occasional bad piece before it reaches the public. However, it is inevitable that some of these pieces will slip through the cracks. As you know, even car manufacturers will occasionally recall thousands of vehicles.
I want to be very clear about this. We will not stop until you have a product that you are satisfied with!!! However, It's up to you to contact us as we cannot contact you. Please give us a chance and call customer service. It's a free call!! 877-GO-BORLA. Ask for Richard or Gabriel.

Rather then pull the piece off and ship it back would Borla reimburse me for having a local shop fix the welds? I'd rather not have to bum a ride to work while the header is gone to be fixed. I can get a local shop to pull it off and fix it the same day.

Weird, only $20 for my local shop to remove the bracket thingy, close it up and fix the welds... I even came in a 2nd time to get it 100% fixed cause it leaked a little more and they did that for free.
By local shop you dont mean places like Mineke, and other brand name locations? They charge an arm and a leg...

I got a call back from Richard a little while ago. He says for me to contact the shop I bought it from to see about getting it fixed or replaced. Why would I go to the shop who sold it to me when its warranteed from Borla? I don't get that part. Otherwise I would have to buy a new header so it could be sent out and when I receive it I would then have to send the orignal back to Borla so they could reimburse me for the cost of the new header. This was the number from caller ID 805-986-9328

I talked to Renick Motorsports and they worked it out with Borla that I am to get an estimate from Extreme Motorsports for the cost to repair the crack. Then I am to fax the estimate to Renick Motorsports who will send it to Borla so they can refund me. Its alot better then the orignal option that I was told which was to send the entire thing back to Borla.
Borla seems to have rushed into the import performance scene. My dad and I are rebuilding a Jeep CJ-7, and along with a weber-carbed, blueprinted, balanced, bored-over, and RV cammed AMC inline six we also have a Borla header ready to be hooked up on the wasteful end of things. The header is like a museum quality piece (like almost all of their previous products). I've noticed, however, that the Borla headers for the Impreza look cheap and hastily concieved compared to their prior efforts. On a number of websites the latest generation of Borla headers for the Impreza are available for near 200 dollars...seemingly a good deal. The problem is that they are not equal length, the primaries have a very small diameter, and they have rough welds on the inside, where it really counts. Overall my opinion is that they just are not nearly refined enough for the highly-tuned-small-displacement-high-revving world of Subaru (and other import) performance. Finally, is there any REAL significant physical difference between the stock Subaru header and the Borla header?

I just bought a Gen IV Borla Header, and it better not crack. If Borla couldnt get it right in 4 tries, they need to put some serious insight into building headers for the EJ25 if they've been building headers for so long. David Borla - Are the Borla Headers tuned length? I dont want any replies to this question until he answers it. Thanks.
Sorry dood, but it's a free world and I just installed the Gen4 Borlas on my GT this afternoon. Don't know what the fuss is all about unless people are inspecting the insides of these with fiber-optic probes and micrometers. Mine fit nicely from the get-go, after 3 bus day delivery from Renick. Very quiet at idle and although they didn't eliminate the mid-range flat spot they come alive from 3K to redline with a nice growl through my OE exhaust with BroSpeed axle-back. For Easter special price of $275 I don't see how you can go wrong. I'll be the first to post if I have any problems with them as well. My $.02 and I'm stickin' to it.

I have the 2.2l Borla header hanging up in my garage because i cracked a weld on the second one I recieved. The first one cracked in the same exact place. I'm just waiting to send it back to Steve at SPO Motorsports to get a full refund. 2 copies of the same product, 40 bucks extra to ship them back(which borla wouldn't cover), and still a POS. If you have an option other than borla for your car try it. Borla is not the way to go in my opinion.
