Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Question Air intake fun!

Hey everyone, I need some advice and help. I have an '02 2.5RS. It is an automatic. Recently, I put in a green filter, then I switched over to a K&N. That is the only thing I did--just a drop in. Well, here's the problem: I was wondering if anyone could tell me why I actually lost power and felt a drop in torque! Mid to high end power was fine, but low end was missing some, and it was noticible (plus it made a different sound under the hood--not as quiet--almost sounded like I had an intake). I put a regular filter back in, and now everything is fine again, just like when I bought it, and the low end is back again! Any ideas why this might have happened? Like I said, no other mods were made. Also, if I decided to go with an intake (Cobb, for example), would that make it worse, causing me to lose even more torque?

I noticed after removing my stock air intake for a Ganzflow that my bottom end lost its umph. (I put in a K&N prior to the Ganz, but didn't notice much) Still pulled great in the midrange and then screamed at the high end. I really miss that take-off feeling too.

More than likely any after market air intake will not feel like the stock airbox on take-off. Mid and Upper rpms will be much stronger with the Cobb and Injen, but I am quite happy with my $50 Ganzflow (and recommend considering it).

It's because there's a signifigantly smaller amount of viable surface area on the K&Ns. There's a lot of excess rubber that covers the filter area around the perimeter. You don't get that with the Green filters. At least not in my experience.

Hey everyone, thanks for the help. I think I know what the problem was after all. When I installed the K&N, it was harder to close, and I didn't properly connect the tabs at the bottom. Thus, I was getting a vacuum leak and losing power that way. I just reinstalled the K&N and connected the tabs properly...wouldn't you know the car runs fine now! Thanks for the help and suggestions!
