There really isnt one. Just get a 3" maf adapter and stick a cone where the airbox is if you want to do anything to it. Or, just remove the fender well intake silencer for now, that gets you about the most power you can get out of an intake for the 1.8. I run that with my 1.8, sometimes throw a cone filter on for kicks (noise) but it does squat for power.
yeah man. take that bull out. you probly have no idea where it is, but i can help you with that. I have a 96 L with an EJ22 and i took mine out. Not much hp gain but the sound under hard acceleration is worth the 10 min it takes to do this. If your interested let me know. Sine00@aol.com

98 should be fine, its not the paper MAF that the 99's had, its the rather robust metal wire one (I'm about 90% certain of this, double check to make sure though)
In any case, with a cone filter vs. the stock airbox, there really isnt any way to "blow the maf" unless something physically gets in there and nails the sensor. They do wear out over time of course.

I bought a cold air intake kit with heat shield from Xcceleration.com
It bolted onto my 1997 Subaru Impreza 2.2 L,
which has old style intake
It feels like a mini-turbo, and kicks in at 1000 rpm
and the power is buttery smooth like a V6
My butt dyno shows it to be at least twice as effective as my underdrive pulley kit

Try to make your own if you have some creativity. I purchased a Minnam intake off of someone a while back used for $25.00. Bought some rubber hoses and clamps, a maf adapter online and a K&N air filter. It works great and has some really good mid-range torque. 8lbs/ft (or so) extra in the midrange according to a dyno I did.
Top end fell off unfortunately to what the stock intake was. I need to retest it because I believe it pulled timing using 87 octane. I have since changed to 89 octane and top end was improved.

Notice how it suddenly ran richer above 5300rpm. Detonation! I don't have it anymore and like I said, timing has been restored according to my pocket logger. Throttle response is excellent as well. Cool cheap intake. All vents on hood are open. Intake is NEVER hot.
You could do it for less than $100 purchasing a used intake as well.
Cool air come in via WRX bonnet hood scoop purchased from MRT performance in Australia a while back. I think they have some here. It helps because I tested it in the 1/4 mile when my car was turbocharged. Only good for .1 - .2 in the 1/4 mile. I'm not sure if you have hood vents but if you do, this is an option.

i like low end torque and would rather not lose the torque box. I just put a filter on the end of the stock tube for right now till i can decide on what i want to replace the tube with. I did notice an increase in power also mostly midrange. I still want to get a heat shield and change the tube to something that resists heat soak a bit better. Hopefully that will make a difference. The earlier models didnt come with this plenum correct?

if you have the torque box on the TB you can get the ganz phase 1 intake. Or you can make your own like i did its pretty much the same as the ganz minus the prm filter. Besides the pully its the best mod ive done. great sound and power in the midrange. Not to mention it makes my magnaflow sound real mean.
