1st gear grinding?

Hey, I'm a newb; I just got a 01 2.5 rs sedan like 2 weeks ago... everything seems to be fine w/it... but when I'm at idle or just stop and try to put it into first gear, I sometimes experience a small noise (possibly grinding), but only for a split second. Is this a major problem that I should take to the dealer? or am I doing something wrong?

Ya it happens to me all the time. I think it's something with the syncros or diff. Someone explained it one time but I forgot. It's not a problem, just annoying. Supposedly better tranny fluid will help.

Sounds like my 2000 OBS I had. When I first got it, no prob. Well I drove like a idiot and slammed the gears quite a bit and after a while 1st and 2nd would crunch a bit. But man, was I suprised how fast that little 142hp 2.2 liter was.

Live and learn. I've been babying my 2004 TS and will continue to do so.

if i try to put my rs into 1st while rolling about 5 mph it does the samr thing push in clutch put into gear, clunk it goes then into gear, not all the time, i think everyone has that under the right circumstance.

Same here. I've trained myself to rev a little and let it pull itself into 1st. Only takes a second and works every time. (My tranny has 106k miles so far, so don't stress about yours).

first gear fells like it has a bulk ring because it is notchy when it grinds

for the last 15k miles i have pounded the gears and really making the tranny shift that now has 155k on it and first gear does this sometimes but most of the time not so dont worry about it til you cant get it in gear at all

ya the guy I bought my rs off of basically told me to never shift into first unless I'm at a complete stop or else I'll grind it. He said it was the design of the subaru transmission or something.

whats up..i have a 98 rs. i heard its some "safety" type lockout that prevents you from going into 1 st gear while moving. if your heading toward a light and it switches to green before your stopped, either double clutch it or go to second, depending on your speed. it works for me. good luck....later
