I have an 2002 2.5RS and I was thinking about upgrading my exhaust yet not ready to shell out the 400 for the catback exhaust. I currently have a slapped on muffler right now. I was wondering what would be the differences from buying an Apexi N1 muffler and having a local shop run 2.5" piping all the way back to the converter, verse buying the actual cat back exhaust? Will there be a difference in sound and performance? I would like to save and go with the whole cat back but i am an impulse buyer so i expect to change it out. Does anyone have the Apexi exhaust already? Is this sucker going to be really loud? I also like having the deep sound and not the ricey coffee can sound. Thanks for any help with this dilema

Sound is always a factor, strommung,Borla.... all have a distinctive sound. The muffler/cat back the exhaust shop may install will have very similar performance to any preassembled cat back. A header is a great idea for increased performance from exhaust. Borla has a header that would fit your car for only $308.
The sound (and looks) are the biggest budget decisions you have to make on the cat back. We sell Borla cat back and custom cat back for Legacy and have found no performance difference between the two.

Well, the Borla is 2" if I'm correct, so I would get the Stromung, Brullen, or the exhaust Primm Motorsports sells.

 

On the Stromung website for pricing they have the price listed as $355 for the dual tip and $339 for the single tip. Is that the price for the whole cat-back system or do i also need to purchase the intermediate pipe as well?
