Again, if anyone needs this done, I recommend this guy. He said he'd do it for 30 dollars + buyer pays shipping both ways. He'll mail the exhaust housing back the next day. If you're in the area, you can stop down by his garage and have him do the whole thing in 1.5 hrs. I linked a small website I made to help him out a bit.
Give an e-mail if anyone needs some work done or advice...

I have a 2004 STi and was going to let my mechanic friend port the waste gate with the turbo still on the car.
It does not come apart like my old WRX, so if you were real crafty and careful could you do this?
Hes going to try it tommorrow 2/3/04. So if you get this please email or PM me. Thanks greg

You got e-mail
Yea, you can ship the whole turbo if you really have to.. Make sure it is packaged really well. You know how postal workers can be...
The exhaust housing for me took a little finagling to get off. We took the whole turbo out. After taking the clamp that holds the housings together, we tapped the exhaust side off with a rubber mallet. Then we stuck a screwdriver in the seam to help pry it off and after a couple of more taps, it pulled apart.

Pretty much what i say if your going to try and do it your self. I say while the wastegate is closed sprat paint it, then remove the pin so and the rod so you can open the wastegate and port inside that hole cool. But thats just what i think, I'll dig up some pics of my turbo's wastegate and let you look and decide for your self. Cool

I'd say take out 70% of the silver sealing lip portion. As you do that make sure you hold the carbide bit (or whatever grider you use) at an angle so you will remove more material beneath the flapper. Widening beneath the wastegatehole can also be done through the section that bolts onto the uppipe.

I spoke to my friend at Turbo XS today about this problem. He told me that not all Sti's experience the excessive over boost problem, and he said that before installing a TBE, the waste gate should be ported to take care of this potential problem..

I have gotten the CEL at cruise speed as well, maybe due to no cat.. used to happen on my WRX as well. As far as the boost creep issue goes, someone at Vishnu told me that the Sti's they have seen that were running a cat did not have this problem..
Can anyone confirm this?

If you're getting a massive amount of boost creep, this means you have a very free flowing exhaust. One way to think of it is why would you spend the money for a turboback that doesn't cause boost creep and is almost as restrictive as the stock system. Might as well go ahead and just replace the muffler if all you're looking for is the sound and a different exhaust tip.
The CEL light coming on at cruise is due to you being catless.
As far as what Vishnu said, having a cat in your exhaust does restrict airflow enough and SOMETIMES allows the car not to experience FUEL CUT. Again this all depends on the type of cat (some flow more air than others) and other variables such as how free flowing the whole exhaust is, elevation, and air temp. The lower the elevation and the lower the air temp. the more likely you will get creep/fuel cut. There have been people who have cats and still get Fuel cut. It depends on the conditions. If porting the wastegate isn't an option, I would recommend just getting a different axelback.
