Regular EJ25 N/A block........ Free for RS owners,
Darton Sleeves.................. 85 x4
Machine work...................... 350
JE Turbo Pistons................... 400
Shot peen and prep rods......200
OR Aftermarket Rods.............700

Total.....................................1790 with aftermarket rods
....................1290 with prepped rods.

And you have something that will be much stronger than an STi shortblock for about the same price.

Add 150 bucks for balancing the whole assembly to 1/4 gram and it'll turn higher RPM's than the STi block with a greater safety margin.

Moral of the story is that you are wasting your money if you buy the STi block.

Also, Darton has bigger sleeves for the EJ20 and EJ25 for increased displacement. However pistons for that will cost about 650 bucks.

NA block is open deck, but who cares.
The Darton sleeves are so stiff it doesn't matter. YOu won't have any cylinder wall deflection.
Stock cylinder walls are 30,000psi tensile strength
Darton sleeves are 130,000 psi tensile strength.

That's enough strength for anything that won't lift the heads.
I'm running 350HP on stock NA block

Only crappy thing is that the wait is 4-6 weeks for your sleeves.

Any good machine shop can install them.
Any good machine shop can shot peen the factory rods
Any good machine shop can balance an entire rotating assembly.

Any updates on who has EJ257 shortblocks in stock? Exeter is out, but I guess Mike Shaw Subaru has some. Anybody else?

I think I was one of the first who had a block. From the dealer, it cost me under $1k brand new and $70 for the 2.5l STi head gaskets.

I have a bit of trouble believing that, since dealer cost is over $1250.

Anyways, there are currently several dealers with EJ257s in stock. Search the vendor classifieds here and on nasioc.

5 speed

I would stick with the wrx 5 speed and drop a better set of gears in it. six speed is fairley useless in first and second after your get up to 350whp.

6MT>5MT. The differentials are better, the case is stronger, the gears are stronger, the synchros are WAY better, shifting is faster and smoother... the only reason to go with a 5 speed or gear set is because you can't or won't spend the extra cash for the 6MT.

I disagree, five speed with aftermarket gears and syncros is just as sound as a six. A 2.5l short block with a turbo that can produce 350whp does not need a sixth gear to stay in the power band. While you are shifting I'll be passing you.

Regardless of what gears you put in, you'll still get case flex. More importantly, you'll have inferior synchros and less longevity. As for gear ratios, the 6MT ratios are quite similar to the 5MT ratios of aftermarket gear sets. Diff ratios are the same. Plus, while you're repairing/replacing your 5 speed again, I'll be at another track day.

Call mike shaw subaru (flat4engineering) last time I checked in they had a ton ready.

Price on them:$1370 plus $65 shipping if you are outide of CO.
