The stock STi catback being 2.5" and restrictive has made the tuning difficult, and it pings like mad when tuned at 230whp. The STi Catback is a bottleneck...
I'll be happy to show you the results when he gets a 3" catback on the thing, he should be making 230-240 w/no pinging...

Sounds like the problems are all in the tuning of his car. There are poeple on the stock turbo, injectors, and pump making more power than he does. I doubt that he will pick up that much power just by swapping the catback. If he was tuned corretly in the first place (not a off the shelf map) then he wouldnt have the pining and low power issues.

you don't know the tuner, so don't suggest its an "off-the-shelf" map...

Hahaha,
Hmmm, Mustang dyno for all the cars noted.
Stock 02 WRX, bone stock with a Ecutek reflash, 200 to the wheels.
04 STI, Cobb dp, stock STI catback and a Cobb AP put down over 272.
05 STI, 3 inch turbo back, Ecutek reflash put down 270.
And your telling me the stock STI catback is so restrictive? Read the above again.
