Trying to decide between 255 and 257...

My stock 2.0 in my 04 wrx has about run it's course. I have pretty much taken a complete rebuild off the table.

I figure if I'm gonna do this I'd like to replace it with a 2.5 liter. I don't have any desire to drive around in a 450whp monster (lies...). My 2.0 liter has 177k on it and is mostly stock. What I would like to do is run about 275-325whp on a safe moderate build.

I am also very hesitant to go with a hybrid as I've seen WAAAAAAAY to many issues and way to many go the way of the metal recycler.

So I'm thinking long block only and I'm wondering if I can pick your guys brain and see if you all might have some links on hand I can read. I've read a BUNCH on this site and nasioc, including the 255/257 comparison thread.

So I'm just looking for some real world advice from some of you guys.

Do I get a newly build 255 long block and run like an 18g or even just a vf34 on it. Or do I find myself a stuffed 04/05 sti with low miles and snag the motor.

I am also wondering what ecu issues I may run in to if I were to run say an 07 ej255 complete swap in my 04.... From what I'm seeing, I will need the 05 ecu.

Sorry to sound lazy. I am doing searches and reading and picking brains but every source is helpful.

Unless you know the history, I would avoid used performance engines.
What issues have you seen/heard of with hybrid builds?
We have built dozens of hybrids over the years without issues.

To install either the 255 or 257, you'd need the ECU and harness, BCM and harness, smog pump, etc.
All of which would cost more than a built EJ20 or built hybrid.

If you just want 300whp the stock 2.0L and 5-speed trans can do that NP. But in your case of high milage you can do a 2.0l rebuild.

I think that would be easier to do with results you'll be looking for.

Or find a stock low milage 255.

Was thinking of getting one of Paul's 255's.

Paul.. Jeff's issues scared me with hybrids but it sounds like you have a new piston that might help? Lot of the early hybrids seemed to have issues. Compression, etc.

I thought about that but if I can get a 2.5 liter and keep my cost some what close I'd way rather do that. Even if my HP numbers are the same both ways, I really want the torque.

Even driving Jeff's Legacy with only exhaust and a tune I was in love. SOOOO much smoother.

I'd love to do a full complete swap but unless one falls on my lap I'm gonna have to figure something else out. So it really leaves me with buying a wrecked STI or doing an ej255.

If I can safely run an ej255 with my stock heads that seems like it would be the perfect route for me. I should be able to hit my budget and be happy with the end result and not have to go through all the ECU business that the ej257 or an ej255 long block set up would do.

I'm still trying to research all of this. I've always been more of a suspension guy. I know just enough about all this to be dangerous. Trying to put a little bit more money together before I pull the trigger on this. Need to do it before I throw a rod though.
