Stock water temp gauge markings

Anyone know what the different hash marks on the stock water temp gauge equal to temp? First hash mark? Staight across? Second hash mark? Lower mark on the overheat area? I'm not having any issues, I'm just wondering what temps are what. Couldn't find anything using a search. Thanks

They don't mean anything. If your temp is in the good range, around 186 to 196(f), the gauge is dead level. If the car overheats, the gauge puts the needle all the way to the top. When you start it cold, it goes from the bottom to the middle when the motor reaches 165(f) or so. But there is no fine degree of motion that you could look at and say "oh, my water temp is 193."

Yup, it is really more of an idiot light than anything. If you really want to know your water temp it is after market gauge time.
