Question Oils..

I would like to switch over to synthetic oil on my next oil change. Is there any non-basis information out their, similar to the thread about oil filters? Right now I am thinking either Amsoil or Redline.

i use redline 5w-30 in my rex and i think it's just great, not too expensive either. i noticed a nice little difference going from break-in dino juice to the synth stuff as well.

Royal Purple

I slowly switched from Dino to Mobil 1 and now to Royal Purple all in the 5w-30 weight...

So far I haven't noticed any real difference in mileage or power...but then again, with our powertrain...a few horsepower here and there isn't going to be felt...

There has been some controversy whether M1 is still a 100% Synthetic compared to Royal Purple, Motul, Redline, Amsoil, etc.... But when you can get M1 for less than $4/qt at Costco you can't really go wrong =).

I've used either Mobil 1 or Redline synthetic in my car for about 75,000 miles continuously. I plan to run synthetic in all of my vehicles after break-in.

I use Redline 10W40 full synthetic on my STi, and wouldn't use anything else.

Question

another vote for mobil 1. Good, cheap, and synthetic. 5w 30. Anyone have any opinions on redline or royal purple specifically? Are they worth the extra 1 or 2 bucks a quart? What's actually the difference between these synthetics?

I am thinking of using Redline for track days then switching back to M1 for the street. Do you think there are any ill effects of switching between them?

I would just use one or the other. If buying Redline gives you peace of mind, do that.

What would you suggest for a good break in period.. I have heard 6 to 8k.. If thats a the case i will switch at my 9k oil change. Should i flush the system? of just change it and dont expect full benifits untill the next oil change? Also, do you know of any reprecussions for switching to synthetic with out first flushing the system? Just curious.. Thanks

hi i am new here, just to comment about oil, i personally used the Motul 300v and motul 8100, they are very good oil indeed. The car feel very smooth and honestly i tried other brands as well and i like this the most. IMO

If you're comfortable switching at 1000 miles, do it... if you'd rather wait til 3k, or 5k, or 10k... do it then. I don't think any set amount is perfect for everyone. Go with what gives you peace of mind.
