Question Might buy a 06 STI

This will be my first post of many(I hope). I have been looking into getting an STi since the frst were released here (US) in 2004. I recently came across a white 2006 STI at a used car dealer. It only has 1020 miles on it and is perfect.
Alright now the reason I cant sleep. The asking price is $29,900. I think this would be a great deal after doing some reaserch on here. Seeing how much 05's are selling for. I am a little worried why it is for sale as a used car though. I asked and the salesman said someone got over there head with the payments and had to trade it in for something cheaper.

Any advice on what to look for?

Is this a good price?

How much should I try to talk them down?

Thanks for any advice and hope to become an active member of this forum.

Try to find out the dealer invoice on their price for a brand new 06 STI (my 05 STi was around $30K new - before tax)

also be sure to mention dealer incentives (that is the dealer usually get like $2-3k off their purchase invoice)

the STI was never that hot of a commodity when compared to the EVO....so don't be afraid to talk the price down with the dealer....(Mitsh*tbishi EVO usually have a higher asking price than the STi)

hmmmm....as far as the 29K asking price for that 06'STI.....don't bet on anything till you see how much you can get a NEW 06' STI for....($29,900 seems pretty close to $30,000 .....why get something use if for $1-2k more you can get it brand new?)

If you're gonna get a use STi.....get a 05'....if you're gonna get a 06 STI...get it new..
....there! that's my 2 cents

My .02...

Would I buy a Outback, Forrester, RS or similar used? Absolutly, Subaru makes aussom cars that will run for 200,000 miles or more and these cars listed are *usually* owned by conservative drivers.

Would I buy a STI used - F*ck NO! Here is my resoning. I bought my STI new for one purpose. To drive the Sh*t out of it! The car is immaculate but I push it every day I take it out. I track it, I auto-x it, I do everything the STI was ment to do. At the same time, I feel that i know how to take care of a car and build a car so that I can keep it in good condition and not push it beyond the breaking point. Most people don't.

I promise you, in less than a 1000 miles, I could turn a STI into a worthless piece of junk. I take that back... in a single 1/4 I could turn it into a piece of junk! Be very careful buying that STI used - you have no idea how the previous owner treated it - I bet he didn't buy it to drive it like a grandma!

+1

I'd be careful of this car. 1000 miles seems pretty low. MAYBE they found the ride to be too harsh...maybe they picked up a bunch of speeding tickets with the car...maybe they got into a financial jam -- in which case, the car should be fine. Or, maybe they drove the crap out of the car and decided it wasn't fast enough for them. Maybe they drove it till it broke, found someone to patch it back together, and pawned it off on the dealer.

My point is, you just don't know what happened to that car in the first 1000 miles (which, I might add, is when you're supposed to be breaking the car in and driving it "relatively" conservatively). The asking price is just way too close to the price of a new '06 to risk all those "maybes". Don't make this an impulse purchase...you have to think about how much that risk means to you to determine how much you'd pay for this car.

Oh, also, you need to inquire about the warranty. If this car ISN'T at a Subaru dealer, I'd wonder why Subaru didn't want to take the car back and sell it. There are some horror stories floating around about people buying used STis at non-Subaru dealerships and having all sorts of problems with them.

This is all great advice, Thank you!

I think I am going to steer clear of the used STI, unless they could give me some definete ansewrs why it is there, (wich I dought I would beleave anyway).

I have been tossing around the idea of getting a TR instead. The qestion I have is, since it is "tuner ready" how far can you modify it for performance before you void the warrenty.

same as with the standard WRX. TR just means you get a ****ty stereo, cheap seats, cheap mirrors, and a few other things for $1000 less
