My reasoning for why a CAI > SRI is because the IAT(Inlet Air Temp Sensor) in the MAF is one of the factors for adjusting/advancing timing. Colder air more timing. (Although its a ****-poor location for it, it should be in the Throttle body after the IC or have 2 for calculating turbo/ic efficiency.)
Note: No aftermarket CAI or SRI is good for a stock WRX.
First off I did read the whole acticle. This one chart (attached), at least how I read it, conterdicts what you say about the K&N flow being the worst.
I read this as Restriction, In. of H20 across the filter(Actual pressure drop across the filter) as CFM increases. This chart alone shows that the K&N flows the best. I may have misinterpreted it but thats how I read it.

Makes sense, everything is a trade off.
I got sick of the debate and bought an HKS three layer foam drop in ~ at least there is no oil...
Oh, and after running a Green an STI (SPT Version) and a K&N... the HKS was the only one I could feel ANY difference with. Better throttle response and easier revving high in the range (above 4 grand) then the others. This was with my mechanic riding and driving the car with each filter as a second opinion.

im happy with my STi filter, personally i think its better than my stupid airhog and it filters better too... i think im gonna buy the HKS just to test it out to see if i like it..its only like $35
atleast the good thing with air filters are that its really easy to switch out and make runs with different ones

remember ALL filters actually filter BETTER (ie trap smaller diameter particulate matter) as they age.
i have run a k+n on my car since the month after i bought it. i resist the urge to overclean it, due to the above point. as a result i clean it once a year.
a good friend of mine picked up 1mph in a 1320 by removing an oem wrx air filter element entirely from the box. i have no corresponding data for any other filter though.
