Help deciding a oil cooler.
So with my motor out Paul from dbtuned recommended that I replace my OEM oil cooler due to the likeliness that the old one could hold trapped metal debris and ruin my new motor (which makes perfect sense). So I have been planning on going with a aftermarket cooler for the new motor anyways to try and improve the reliability of the new motor so I think this might be the perfect time to get one. Problem is I can't decide which one, or even if I should get one period and just replace the OEM. Here are the ones Im trying to decide on in my budget minded price range. ($300-500)
1-Prosport oil cooler $389- Looks pretty nice with its Greedy like blue anodized finish and would look great behind the grill of my blue car. Its got a built in thermostat (although I don't really know how much I would need this living in the bay area). It is a bit on the small side (13"Wx3.5"H), but how big does the cooler have to be and really the whole cooler would be open to the air (unlike some of the other ones). Zip tie mounts FTL.

2-Process West- Looks freakin awesome. The kit they make is specifically for the GDB chassis so it bolts to existing mounting points and sits right behind the STi badge for even more coolness. Best of all is that it seems to be the best built cooler with its bar and plate design and beautiful TIG welds that also has a nice bling factor to it. It comes with nice goodridge lines as well. The bad is that its pretty pricey. I found it on a website (jdmmonster.com) for $460 but the website looks kinda sketchy, the cheapest other website had it for $550.

3-MFactory oil cooler-This is the biggest of them all, and too me seems kinda too big. The picture they have posted has it mounted sideways from the grill down into the front bumper opening, and that deffinately screams pull me over. And thats has a big part of me not going with a FMIC. And it also is blocked by the bumper alot. But the cooler core looks real nice, its teflon lined so any corrosion issues would not be a worry. The price is right though at around the same price as the Prosport.

Or just replace the OEM cooler with a new one and be done with it. Probably the simplest, cheapest, and fastest way to get my car back. But I would be right back to where I started, just with a fresh built motor.

Well I have no plans to go FMIC at this time. I think the aps TMIC should be plenty enough to handle the 3071 with the boost levels I will be running. But also even more reason to go go with a nice oil cooler. Greddy is over priced and is not even worth the money IMO, no thermostat, run of the mill oil cooler for a price tag of $700.
make your own, find a badass core and build the rest with your own -AN fittings and lines. You will need a built in thermostat as it only lets oil into the cooler once your temp reaches like 180, otherwise the cooler will bring the temp of your oil down below operating temp and thus will not let the oil do its job.
you can save a lot of money doing this and be able to make it exactly how you want.
