Sti vs EVO
The two con's that I am hearing about the STi are: 1) Unable to tune ECU. 2) Doesn't "feel" as good on the track as the EVO.
I am guessing that # 1 will be moot by the middle of next year as there will be a few chip tuners that will be able to flash the ECU.
As far as # 2, does anyone know if mitsu went with a stiffer springs/struts to achieve the better feel? The overall weight of the two cars is very close and the F/R weight distribution is very close. Also, does anyone know if the magazine "testers" used the 50/50 or 35/65 Dccd setting? This would make a huge difference in it's performance on the track.
BTW, I took Mastro's STi for a test drive and was extremely impressed. I thought the brakes were top notch, the power was more that adequate
. The ride was a little stiff, but that is just fine. The shifter was a little sloppy, but maybe I need to get use to the 5th to 6th shift. I briefly hit 4th twice while looking for 6th.

Yeah, about the feel, in my opinon it has nothing to do with the springs and struts...it is the steering. Alot of people like it cause they say "It gives you alot of feed back", but my feeling is the opisite. I dont like how loose it is, it is much to easy to turn the stearing wheel for my taste. I like how the 98 porsche C4S stearing feels, or a 2002 camaro z28, it is nice having a steering wheel that you have to tug at, infact my race car has no power stearing and i think that i will yank the power steering out of the STI also. But some people love how the STI steering wheel feels, it is all preferance. But one thing the EVO has is a lower center of gravity, the STI sits way to high for the track, but it is nice to have that ride hight on the street, the ride hight makes you uncomfortable going into a turn to fast, but once you are in it, you will realise how much faster you can go at it. For me it took a little getting used to.
But as long as we are discussing the STI draw backs i will point out 2 more. One is i hate how the nose dogs down from the 1-2 shift. And the other is that the car is hard to shift smothly, usally i can hop in a car and make it feel like an auto, but this car it took me a while to get it to shift nice and smooth.
All of those are just opinons though.

I drove an sti for the 5th or 6th time last weekend. i agree about the steering. i dont necassarliy think its the power that bothers me. something about it is too tight. i have owned 2 cars without power steering, and when at speeed they felt way different then the sti does. im jsut being nit-picky, but other then that it was an awesome experience.
as far as the evo, i have had several chances to play around with it. it is a very good handling car, and the lower center of gravity makes a big difference. the evo is more "fun" but given some time with the car, i think the sti has the capability of being much faster.

Talked to a dealer who also is into performance tuning...they mentioned that Prodrive is coming with a new set of spring for the STI...which apparently lowers the ride, with improved handling and still gives a better ride that stock....suppose to be available sometimes early next year....
