06 STI Blow Off Valve

Hey guys, I got an 06 STI. I want to get a blow off valve as my first modification... I want to protect my stock turbo as long as possible. Is this a smart thing to get a blow off valve first? And if so. Which one should I get.. I was thinking the

Greddy type RS

or the turbo XS Type H-RFL

I want one when I change gears I wanna hear the PSTT.. And when I get the blow off valve, Does tcome just the BOV itself? Or does it come with all the hook up and such?

You'll see a lot of people saying that it's not necessary, and to get one if you want to. I plan on getting one as well, but I'm planning on getting the Go Fast Bits WRX Stealth BOV. It vents back into the intake to prevent the fuel mixture from getting too rich, and it vents out to the atmosphere for the sound we all like. The cool thing is that it does both at the same time.

its not that its not needed, its that its like de-tuning your car. If you want to sacrifice gas mileage, make your car rougher, and run rich all for a sound when you shift gears, go ahead and get one

I really just wanna go and get the BOV out of the way, I wanna push around 25+ lbs of boost. (Not on stock turbo of course). Ive been told that if you want the PST sound, just take the silencer off the stock BOV. Ive looked at the bov, but where is the silencer? Is it actually INSIDE the bov?

the stock BPV will hold up to 20 psi so you will be fine with that. If you want the sound from the BPV you can take out the "snorkel". Its located behind the passenger front wheelwell. just do a search for how to do a snorklectomy and you will find out just how to do it.

See moffman42's post. Don't spend money on a mod that will lose power & run worse for a psssst noise. I think in general STI owners frown upon owners that put BOV on their non-modded cars. Don't get me wrong if your pushing big pressures & actually need the BOV cool. But the general consensus is you're a ricer-kid putting them on Subies just for the noise. Just my 2 cents its your ride. Theres many areas better off spending your money than that mod.

If you want that cool pssssh sound like a BOV, get a Forge BPV. It's a direct replacement to the stock BPV, 100% recirculating, and you can change the spring inside to coexist with your current boost levels...plus it doesnt make your car run rich between shifts

Nobody has been able to COMPLETELY get rid of that moment of richness... consider it logically... Valve opens, releases air... no matter what... youve released a certain amount of that air that your ECU has compensated for in fuel...

with ANY BOV, you will have a moment of richness... Its not GREAT for your motor... but its benefits are nil... some optimists can say it serves to cool your pistons for a brief moment, ehhhhh.... If you want to look at it generally... Running Rich is safer than running lean...

adjustable BOVs are only good to get rid of rough idles, and dropping rpm and alleviating SOME level of lag...

There would be no richness associated with the valve that he is talking about as it recirculates the same as stock.

If the above is true, then it doesnt vent to atmosphere... hence defeating the purpose of the "psshhht" sound.

A description of the Forge BPV:

Made from billet aluminium, this recirculating diverter valve dumps the charge-air back into the air intake system keeping external noise to a minimum. This increases both quicker throttle response and higher clamping load to maintain boost pressure more reliably.

Its plain and simple logic. The sound is created by venting to atmosphere. Venting to atmosphere creates a moment of richness. If you want more sound than what you get from a silencer delete or a cold air intake, you will HAVE to vent to atmosphere. End of story.

And the answer to everything is.... Get a SPT intake. You want to save your brand new turbo? Keep your stock parts, thats why subaru sold the car, so we can drive it for hundreds of thousands of miles.. (not really) but you get the point. The best stock bov is the 1g dsm bov. Of course you wouldnt need one because STI's can make more than enough hp with stock bov. Try searching for EM = Engine management and Dp = Downpipe as your first mods.
