Where is the MAF sensor?
I've been doing some reading on how the MAF sensor gets oil from the filter. I figured i'd pull mine and clean it.
MY04 came with what looks very similar to a K/N filter from the dealer? Is this typical? It is not one of the el cheapo paper fram filters. It looks like it has some excess oil perhaps.
So i guess my questions are:
Do all WRX's come with this style filter stock?
Where is the MAF sensor and how do i get to it to clean it?
Thanks,
DAn

Number one, don't ever touch your MAF censor, if it's faulty buy a new one. If you touch it you will probably screw it up. It is fine pieces of metal right after your air filter that read the incoming air charge (and extreamly easy to break), should be the unit with the wiring going into it on top of your air box. The only reason people have problems with them and say it get's intake oil on them is because they are retarded, have no buisness taking apart anything in their engine bay, and are ripping apart things for the sake of looking at it.
If you get an aftermarket intake and you need to install it don't touch it, and if you re-oil your filter because it's washable make sure it's dry and not logged with oil when you reinstall it. That is the only reason I could think of for oil being on it, other then turbo cars randomly consume and burn oil. Lets say you take your intercooler off and there is a small amount of oil around the edges of the inlets, this is normal. It will randomly go into your blow off valve and into your intake. I recommend not getting an aftermarket intake, the stock one is fine.

I have heard of people cleaning their MAF by putting it into a plastic bag, gently spraying it with non-clorinated brake cleaner and letting it dry. If you do this make sure not to touch the MAF wire because it will break.

I'm just saying if something get's so bad that it causes a problem, get a new one, MAF sensors aren't that expensive. It also sounded like he wanted to take it out every week and clean it. I know any sensor gets bad over time, but these sensors are a pain to not throw when you mod any car. I've been modding cars forever now and I know some people read stuff on a message board not knowing what to do. They go out, rip their intake apart and F' with their MAF then it's broke and they don't have a car. Then they go to subaru and they get charged 300 bucks to put on a 20 dollar sensor. The whole point of my message was tell him not to mess around with it untill he throws a CEL for it.

Regarding the cleaning what should I see afterwards? what I mean is that when I look in there now (assuming its dirty) I see the two wires coming across with what looks like tubes covering the wire in the middle. what should see after its clean? I don't want whatever that covering is to be taken off my the cleaner.
