I'm long over due for new plugs (mileage-wise), but it's still running strong. how can i tell if i need to replace the plugs? any obvious signs?

 

And for that matter...where are they? DIY pics would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

at one point i started working on it, however, you really need proper tools to make the job easy.

 

As far as do you need to replace them, you'll want to pull them out and have a look see to see if they're dirty. If you're going to go to that much trouble, I'd just replace them at that point.

NGK coppers are less than 2 bucks apiece, so replace them as often as you want. I recommend them for best power/knock protection. They typically last about 15k.

What happens if you use them for too long? - my initial question.

 

You start having more difficult starts if you REALLY keep em for too long. Also, they affect your gas mileage eventually and even your throttle response...less spark=more fuel for same amount of combustion under clean spark.

Then again, that's just my common sense...if I'm wrong...WHOOP DEEEEEE DOOOOO...i'm sooooooooooooooo sorry!

If you wear your plugs out, you get less spark, which results in hard starts, low mileage, loss of power, maybe even misfire CELs. Once you get the procedure down it should take you about 10-15 minutes to change them. Nothing difficult at all about it, other than the fact you need to pull your battery, washer bottle, and snorkus (lucky me- my SOHC heads have the plugs angled, so they clear the battery, and I don't have a snorkus anymore ).
