Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

The turbo doesn't provide boost when at idle. Instead it works just like a normal car which runs on vacume. So don't worry about it ok?

Just think of it as your turbo being in idle.

Your gauge probably reads engine vacuum in inches of Mercury (Hg) when not under boost. This is the normal operating condition until the throttle position, RPM, and load on the engine is great enough for the turbo to develop boost, or positive manifold pressure. Normally aspirated engines display similar readings but will not develop positive manifold pressure except on highly tuned race engines.

A quick check of the internet showed that normally cars run between 14-20 inches of mecury (hg) at idle.

Heh...

anyhow...

When you're on the gas and the turbo is spining you're creating positive pressure (boost) that is greater than the negative pressure (vacuum) being created by the intake action of the engine head. When you're off the gas and the turbo is not creating positive pressure greater than the intake action of the engine, you boost gauge reads that situation as vacuum created by the engine. S'all relative. One engine parts suck is another engine parts blow. *cough*

I figured someone should explain why this normal situation is normal
