Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

What's the stock turbo?

Mitsubishi TD04L , small, spools quick, not a lot up top. Couldn't tell you what max WHP is but Id guess 250 WHP max depending on whose dyno.

along the same lines, is there a replacement turbo that will work efficiently with the current fuel system; ie. mapping, rail and pump?

well, the stock TD04 is actually the quickest spooling thing. if you want a bit more on the top, you could try deadbolt or forced performance as they do some work on the stock turbo. however, it would probably be better to just get a bigger turbo, as many are on sale used right now for a good price. the stock turbo, due to it's smaller compressor has a good low to mid range punch, but loses breath on the top end, that's where all the VF series turbos come into play. the VF series turbos are probably the smallest of the upgraded turbos, the VF22 being the big boy of them all, but you'll suffer the most lag since it has a P20 exhaust side, same like the PE turbos. i'd say if you're looking more for good all-around turbo's, then the VF turbos are the way to go, with a good tune, the VF22, 30, 34 can get you in the 300whp range with proper supporting mods and still be pretty driveable. if you're looking for more power, then you should look to other turbo's. do a search on upgraded turbos or aftermarket turbos, you'll find lots of information which should help you.

TD04L-13G to be exact... so you don't confuse it with the more tastey 16G. Here's the compression map for the 13G

...or so I've been told.

The factoid that I keep missing is: what's the USDM STi turbo?!

Buschr racing has a new 16G upgrade for the WRX. The total package I believe is 1300, could be wrong, and comes with everything needed to install, including all oil lines, up pipe and down pipe. This setup shoud perform well and have good spool characteristics.
