Well when you hear a big clunk and metal shrapnel falls from under the car you have a bad tranny.

I'd bring it to the dealer and have them change the diff fluid. If metal chunks come out, the tranny's almost done.

 

If you are hearing cluncking...you are HOSED!
if you hear a loud whirring under decelaeration...you are on your way to being HOSED.

 

Thats BS because every single WRX I have heard makes a loud whirring noise under deacceleration.

Maybe you think that it's loud now...just wait...maybe someday you'll hear it REALLY get loud.

It's not that it's a crappy tranny. It's that the wrx is the first subaru experience for most people and they don't know how to drive it. Subarus cannot be driven like Hondas and Acuras.

 

You might want to be more descriptive of the clunking noise. With respect to trannys I found the trannys on FWD cars seem to be the loudest when shifting into gear from a stop and low speed shifting. In my Z32TT(RWD) it was not as noticable on the old or new trannys but you could tell when you were shifting at lower speeds or from a stop - definitely not as loud as my Integra is. So if you're having loud clunking at speeds higher than 20 you might be on your way to some issues. =) Under 20 can be normal unless you're really beating the **** out of it.. yikes. On an AWD I know that you're supposed to be light on the initial clutch engagement - all assumption as I haven't owned an AWD yet. =)
