what is general opinion on Cold Air Intake?
I have read some posts that were against the use of a cold air duct. Why?
Cold air is denser with oxygen, it seems to me that if the AMS measures this and the ECU adjust mixture accordingly, then the result is better efficiency?
I thought about modifying the stock air filter box by making a larger intake duct from the box into the fender well, making a nice duct with aluminum and creating a scoop in the black under car apron (under where the air-silencer lived).
But if cold air isn't the way to go........why bother?

Most people don't install CAI intake is because of the MAF sensors. The colder and larger air flow by the MAF sensor and it will trigger the CEL with the sensor overflowed ( MAF is kinda sensitive on 02 WRX). Second is Air/Fuel ratio issue. Too much air means less fuel cause lean to the engine that will harm the engine. ( always run rich better than lean)
Even my dealer ( mechician told me the best intake is the stock intake. Change of high flow air filter - K& N or sti would be enough for mod in intake section!!)

Most even stay away from drop ins because the oil can foul the MAF. I agree with everything said above, however someone is going to jump in an second and say CAI make 13hp and they have never heard of a engine blowing up because CAI. And they are probably right too. It's your choice but I think your money would be better spent on an uppipe. Or gut your uppipe and buy DP. Best bang for the buck.
I have been running an AEM CAI for about 10 months now, and I haven't thrown any CEL's. I know that it probably runs a little more lean than it did from the factory, but the WRX runs VERY rich from the factory anyway. IMHO the lean condition is nothing to worry about with a CAI on a WRX. I realize that it might still mess with the MAF a little, but I still like my CAI. I think that it gave me a little better performance. No 13hp, but something.

the more air the better, as long as you do it right. i have heard short ram is better than the long intakes that go to the fender. i got an AEM Short Ram Intake off ebay for $155 with shipping and everything off ebay. I have heard why aem is so good is because it tricks your engine into running a little bit leaner. it has worked great for me, it definitely helps keep performance more constant depending on how hot the air is and such. Not to mention is sounds great, you can here the stock bov and the suction noise is great. aftermarket BOV's are supposed to be worse for the stock turbo than the stock BOV is, so i use the intake for the noise too, if nothign else. it definitely doesn't hurt. just don't get generic...thats my advice
