what are the first mods to do?
There are no first mods. What you want to do is follow a plan for what you want to do first.
Do you want to go fast or carve canyons?
I think first and formost ditch the stock tires in favor of something a little more performance orientated. Look at some Kumho 712's, Sumitomo HTRZ II for budget performance tires. For a little more money, Bridgestone SO-3's. Very good tires. At least if you do decide to go faster, you can have tires that will help you stop and turn better.
Once you got some new shoes on your ride, uncork your exhaust system. Get a catless uppipe and some type of turboback system either catless or with a highflow cat. That should give you about 20-30HP more and loads of torque.

I agree with teiaa-boy, it totally depends on what your goals are. How much do you want to spend? Do you care more about going fast or having insane grip levels, or do you like to drift?
If you want handling, tires are a great choice, don't forget the Falken Azenis' - insane tire for the price, but the treadwear isn't the highest. The Kumho 712s are good but they are a little noisy and are nowhere near as sticky as the Falken's, but are great for drifting, and have a very good treadwear. If you want to do rims, do these at the same time so you don't have to buy tires twice. You can get a good deal on Rota's. After that go with strut tower braces, or anti-sway bars, followed by struts/coilovers.
If you want to go fast, the exhaust is probably the best performance increase for the dollar, but they still aren't cheap. If you are new to performance I would pick one of the major vendors and go with the staged packages. TurboXS and Vishnu would be my top choices. Both of them have user programmable ECU's which are great. The vishnu product (EX-EED)just came out so there isn't a lot of experience with the product yet, but shiv is a fine tuner. The UTEC from TurboXS has been out for a while. I have one and love it. You should expect 50-60 HP from a TBE and a computer.
Don't forget the safety items. A turbo timer is a good choice to prolong your Turbo's life, but isn't really necessary until you get a little further along. Gauges are a must as you progress your car. Make sure you have a boost gauge, get an EGT gauge as well at least.
