What 3” metallic substrate cat should I go with?

For some reason I'm not able to access Random technology’s site but I was able to find this http://www.rpmoutlet.com/powercat.htm. I like the size and weight of the powercat converter but it doesn’t have a heat shield and I would think that could cause some problems since cats get very hot. After doing a search these two cats are the only ones I found so if you know of any others that would be better please let me know.

questions.

a) What brand of metal sub cat flows best?
b) Where is the best place to buy one?
c) Do you really need a heat shield on the 3rd cat (midpipe)?

Thanks.

You just posted the same link that I did in my original post so yes that is what I'm talking about . I am also looking into a Random Tech cat that I think will flow better than the Powercat. A 2.5" Powercat flows 398.4 cfm and a 3" Random Tech flows 598 cfm so if the Random cat isn’t a lot more expensive I think I will go with that.

I sell metal cats from Arvin Meritor, who is an OEM manufacturer of parts. These will not melt down b/c of its metal substraigh. here are some testing results. I have one on my car and i have to say it is probably one of the best cats you can get. I have had catless down pipes and this cat is probably the closest one that performs like a catless down pipe. I have had other cats put on manufactures such as Mangaflow, but this one by arvin is by far the best. this cat is 49 state legal but not for california OBD2. http://www.supremeperformance.com/Di...ab.aspx?tid=10

by the way Mo Rex, where did you get your information from about they CFM rating, there is no way that the random cat can flow that much, unless the honey comb is not there. (hehehehe) not calling you a liar, just wanta know where you got that info from.

by the way on these power cats they have no approval from epa or carb about there legality, they say its obd2 and 1 compatible but doesnt have anything about them being legal on the streets.
actually its says that they are for off road application only. "PowerCAT designed for racing and off-road applications and are OBD-I & II compatible. "

Is there a price on these?

Looks like a little door on the top?

Does this company sell 2 bolt 3/8" thick 3" flanges?

FWIW any non oem cat in Kahleeforneea is considered illegal.

Thanks for the info. Now that the Powercat is out of the question all I need is for Random to call me back with a price and tell me if their unit has a heat shield or not. I have read some reviews of Randoms cats and quite a few people complain about rattling heat shields and bad customer service so if it has a heat shield I will almost definitely go for the Arvin. When I am ready I’ll send you a PM.

Info from http://www.randomtechnology.com/ so you don’t think of me as a liar J/K.

This design, which meets Federal EPA and California ARB requirements, enables virtually any vehicle with a properly tuned engine to meet emissions standards with little, if any power loss (compared to an exhaust with no catalytic converter). Please note that no aftermarket catalytic converters are legal for installation in California on OBD II vehicles (some 1994 & 1995, and all 1996 and later vehicles).
In fact, Random Technology catalytic converters actually have a higher flow capacity than many mufflers. As an example, a 3" diameter 7000 series SuperStainless converter flows 598 cfm. Most 3" diameter high performance mufflers flow less than 475 cfm at the same test pressure. Random Technology direct fit SuperStainless catalytic converters are available for most domestic and imported vehicles. Custom catalytic converters with inlets and outlets up to 4" in diameter are available.

I'm no expert but I don’t see why their cat wouldn’t be able to flow 64 cfm more than the Arvin.

Here's a cool link for people that don't know much about metallic substrate cats http://www.oxi-kat.de/catalytic/meta...substrate.html. Cobb uses the pic's on this site to illustrate the construction of the cat used in their catted DP.
