I am going to be installing an Autometer carbon fiber water temp
gauge into my car. Is it a better idea to tap into the ECU or
should i install the temp sender etc.? Will one give a more
accurate reading than the other?
Thanks

Im in a 02 WRX and already have the EGT, Boost, oil temp, and AFR gauges. Yes, the car already has a water temp gauge, but the factory has it calibrated so the needle won't move unless there is a extremely high temp. The actual temp can rase/fall by about 40 degrees withou the stock gauge showing a difference at all.

A direct T-fitting would be the most accurate method anyhow. It's a direct temp reading from the fluid whereas the ECU reading has all the more chance for inaccuracy through electronic error. Something like this:

Ok. Being the dumba$$ that I am, I tried to tap into the coolant temp wire on the ECU. DON'T DO THAT! Got an extremely hot reading (close to 250 deg.) and the engine fan wouldn't stop running. Oh yeah, CEL too. After disconnecting everything, the light went off and the car runs fine. Just a word of warning to you guys.
