Depends on the budget. A 16g would be ideal for good spool + good power.
But if you can't afford the 16g series, standard option is the
VF34 or VF39 turbo
Injectors ("pinks" or better)
STI TMIC (or eBay TMIC)
Fuel pump
Pro Tune.
It's good budget power and you won't be phased by stock STIs or Evos any longer. Shop around and look for people parting out their cars on the forums and you can get some bargain deals on most of that stuff.

Ive been debating the same question for almost a year. Im about 90% sure Im going with an 18g of some sort. It will have some lag but I dont care, its a turbo car
I want boost to come on strong at 4K rpms and hold til I shift.
If you want similar spool of the stock turbo, a vf34 or 16g would be good.
keep in mind on 91 octane most bigger turbos will perform close to each other in terms of hp/tq. It wont be until you are running higher octane or alch/meth injection that you see the big gains that a big turbo is capable of. If you ever plan on running a high octane map or have 93 at the pump, go with an 18g...or 18g with 8cm housing like the GReddy T518z.
