VF34 with an STI TMIC

Anyone running this setup? Will I even see an increase in performance? Or will my stock WRX TMIC good flow efficiently enough for the VF34.

Thanks All.

Stock will flow good enough... but it will hold you back. I am currently running a stock topmount and my car runs really good. I just did some one on one tuning with Phil @ element tuning (was with TXS) and he said that I am making around 285 to 290whp. So that should give you an idea.

If stock top mount is good enough for an FP Green... then it's good enough for any IHI turbo. But of course, like RAGE said, it will hold you back.

I wouldn't spend my money on an STi top mount...if I was gonna get a top mount it would be a TXS or APS....the STi topmount is not that much bigger then a stock WRX intercooler

Sounds

high for a stock TMIC. I have a VF-34, and dynos read differently, but close to 300whp is tough for a VF-34. What dyno? Setup? I live in Hawaii, no AWD dyno, so to tune I'd have to convert to FWD for a dyno tune.

I tuned the car in MD with Phil last week. We did a road tune. I asked him what he thought the car would put down on a dyno. He said around 285 to 290whp. Only because my car was creating boost and holding it to redline in most gears. 1st gear was making 17lbs... while in 3rd I was making 19.3lbs dropping to 17 to redline.

The car will be here in Hawaii in about a month. I can get together with you when it gets here and let you take a look at the map if you would like. I basically did the map with Phils input. He really does know his stuff. But I don't think every car with a stock TMIC will make this HP. I am lucky!!!

I'd love to

check out the map. Give me a call when you get here. 808-422-2595 (home), 808-448-1436 (work), or 255-8591 (cell). I believe the map I'm running is Turbo-XS Phil's VF-30 map, and it pulls nicely.

Talking tip for you

San

I am already here. When I get some things settled I will give you a ring. I have a lot to do and I start work on Monday already. I just arrived here Friday.

BUT the tip that I was talking about... Phil told me to run the stg4 FMIC map. You may already know this. He told me that this is the best "base" map that they created and the stock TM will handle it fine. My map started life as the stg4 FMIC map... and we just played with it for about 3 hours to get it working better. We created 2 maps for out here. One is 19lbs of boost and the other is a 17lb one. They both pull very hard, but the 19lb one is really strong. When my car gets here I would like to take it to the track

So if Rage upgraded his Top mount will it affect his whp or just make the turbo spool faster, or both. Sorry just trying to justify buying a larger TMIC. If it only improves spool up time id spend the extra money on p/p'ing the VF34.

Hijacker here.

I wouldn't go with an upgraded top mount. I've seen three guys on island here (Oahu) who sold their upgraded top mount at a loss to go FMICs. I p/p'd my VF34, but didn't have it on the car beforehand, so I have no comparison experience. Dan at Godspeed felt it was a waste of money, but I'd seen good reviews from others, so I had Deadbolt do the p/p. Hijacker out.

It will allow him to push more boost safely, thus making more whp. I don't believe they help with spoolup but I could be wrong. I'm not a fan of TMIC's anyway.

The stock topmount is just restrictive. Running a FMIC would allow more cool air to flow.... thus allowing the engine temp to drop (which will equal more HP) It would make it safer for me to run the 19lbs that I currently am running. I will be upgrading to a FMIC, I am just not sure when.

I have the JDM v7 STi TMIC and it works just fine as far as I'm concerned. It is 40% larger than the stock USDM TMIC and because it is LIGHT, once it gets hot, it cools off faster than heavier ones...also, having the correct splitter/seal/scoop(and an IC water sprayer) increases efficiency a great deal as well.
FMIC's are great, but they can be a big liability in daily use....

Yo San....wassup...
