though i haven't used a usb-->serial in THIS capacity, i certainly do at my day job, and i can tell you that it provides a true, fully compatable serial port interface, so chances are you'll have no problems.

usb to serial
Hey Ken,
That's coool, thanks for the help. I went ahead and ordered an adapter because I read that you can actually assign a com port once you hook it up. Nathan from txs said it should be fine so I'll give it a whirl.
Does anyone know about the terminal emulator software for the palm??

I bought a usb serial adapter from Microwarehouse. Nathan from txs said that should work fine. Here's the link:

Does Online allow for data logging? I read somewhere that it doesn't allow you to log, or else maybe you need more memory on the PDA or something?

Online is just a terminal emulator that connects you to any system via telnet or VT100 session, etc.. If you are planning to use it to log , you must be able to set up a session into a Utec or other engine management system that supports logging.
There are several Palm applications that support datalogging via serial to OBD2 connector ..ie Pocketlogger, etc..

I bought a Belkin USB to Serial adapter at Best Buy for programming industrial electronic stuff. Despite warnings from other users, it has worked well on all my applications except one brand of PLC, which it refuses to talk to. The only problem I've had is that if your laptop goes to sleep, the adapter sometimes won't work when it awakes and you have to reboot.
