uppipe stuff

Okay, so I'm going to install the uppipe later this week. But I need to prep accordingly. First off, which gaskets will I need. I know the 2 for the uppipe, but will a need a new one for the dp? I'm planning on just taking the turbo out, which is supposed to be the easiest way. Also, the pipe has the 02 bung, but I'm probably just going to plug it and do the fix. What all will I need for that? Any suggestions?

i would recommend going from the bottom and leaving the turbo in.

I hear that you have to take the downpipe off to get to the uppipe also, I think I'm right I dunno.

yes you will need to remove the downpipe to get at the nuts which hold the up pipe to the turbo flange.

first, you can start working already.

remove the splash shield.

spray all nuts and bolts with penetrating oil. try to hit ALL of them.

start taking off the exhaust manifold's heat shield. some of those bolts may be rusted to the point of seizure. keep applying penetrating oil (i have the best luck with pb blaster). you might break a bolt.

this can all be done way before you actually start the up pipe job, and the car can be driven indefinately with these parts removed.

on the day of, get yourself a crow's foot 22mm (or 7/8ths inch) socket, which is used for the o2 sensor in the passenger's exhaust manifold collector. the socket type are ok, but mine didn't have the clearance to get all the way seated on the o2 sensor, so i ended up dropping the pipe with the o2 sensor still connected. the crow's foot would have avoided this complication.

have tin snips or a dremel handy to snip the heat shield which prevents dropping the heatshield with the o2 sensor in place.

sidebarL i never put my heatshields back on. i wrapped and sealed my manifold.

have a tube of anti-sieze paste handy, and reapply it to all fasteners as you reassmble.

have new gaskets.

follow the tightening procedure.

Okay, I get how to put the pipe in okay. Is there anywhere that'll tell how to do the o2 fix? do you just clip the wires and solder in the resistor? Any pictures? Is that just like a $1 resistor? Cause I've seen the resistor fixes that were like $20.

Oh also, the uppipe didn't come with the studs on the turbo end. Do I pick up some from the dealer, or do I just use some bolts from home depot

Yeah, mine didn't too. You get what you pay for. It would be best to have tight-fitting studs already in the uppipe, as installing it snugly becomes a b*tch as you have to hold the bolt with a wrench while tightening it.. whereas, if you had studs like OEM, you only need to tighten the nut, for a secure and simple fit.

I would assume that if it didn't come with anything, you should get the best hardware you can. Home Depot should have grade 8 nuts and bolts, but be sure to pay attention to the stock bolt and nut's length and diameter.

I dont think I would go to Home Depot for the bolts because its a home improvement store. I dont know how they are where you live but here in St Louis most of the workers dont know much about home hardwear moreless auto parts. Try an auto parts store so you dont have to do install twice.

Good luck.

Regarding the O2 sensor - I decided to use my compound tinsnips ($16) to cut the heatshield so that I didn't have to remove the O2 sensor to get the heat shield off. Since most guys do the hack to the heatshield anyway, you can remove the heatshield bolts, let it dangle on the sensore and carefully make two cuts through the shield to create a "U" shaped access hole.

Regarding the Studs - I believe they are metric studs and you may want to call around and see whose got them. I doubt Home Depot will have em....check McMaster Carr online and you can get them next day.

- be careful when you lift the engine to pull the uppipe, some guys have gotten coolant leaks from moving it to much.

- go ahead and remove the airbox. It will let you see abit better the sensor wires

- you can probabley use the stock downpipe gasket and be OK

- check Vishnu's instructions online, they are pretty complete & thorough
