Up pipe swap

Hey Guys,
On Friday/ Saturday I plan to install my gutted up pipe. I've never done this before, and i plan to use the write-up on ScoobyMods.com.
Does anyone have any advice for me?

How long has the original pipe been on the car? If it has been more than 2 years, use lots and lots of Liquid Wrench on the bolts and let it soak in for 1/2 hour or more. After 2 years of being heated to 1600 degrees and then cooled, they tend to be a little stubborn

Major PITA to fix if you do what I did.

BP Blaster is your friend. If you can soak them overnight do it. Also come back a few days later and re torque the bolts.

I'm probably going to start this tomorrow night (because the weather has cleared up here in MD). I'll spray the bolts, and let them sit over night.

I have already done the mechanical CEL fix for my O2 sensor thats on the mid pipe. Are what other "fixs" do i have to do for the up pipe?

Well, it looks like you will also be learning how to do a downpipe removal & replace this Friday/ Saturday also....

I prefer to use PB Blaster on all the bolts I will be trying to get off - usually spray the stuff on about 15-20 minutes before going at it!

Oh, also make sure you have the parts (2.2k resistor) to do the CEL fix (prevent CEL from coming up)

Currently, i have the heatshield off and the O2 sensor removed.
do i have to do anything to the front O2 sensor to prevent a CEL?
Tomorrow i am going to install the 2.2k resistor, and hopefully get the DP and UP off.

The sensor in the exhaust manifold needs to stay there...

You should also have new gaskets to use when putting on the new part(s).

I believe you will need a few different length ratchet extensions for the up-pipe to turbo bolts, and an assortment of box-end wrenches.

All the stuff the above posts, patience, and determination and you should be set to

Do you have deep sockets also? These may come in handy for clearance reasons...

This will be a "fun" project for the first time!

I also kept a floor jack nearby; for jacking up the engine a little (1-2 inches) to get the up-pipe out from the engine area.

I just did the gutted uppipe/ Helix catted DP install last night on my '04 wrx, took me 5 hours including a trip to Advanced Auto for the O2 socket. Stage 2 AP flash as well. Stock to Stage 2 is an awesome jump! It is so easy to get the uppipe out of you just take off the exhaust manifold. No engine lifting or any of that stuff. Had a lot of fun doing this install, first time doing this, could probablydo it again in much less time. Have fun!

The next time you should be able to do it in about half the time.

I have remove and re-installed the up-pipe, downpipe, exhaust manifold, and cat-back about four times already - mainly because of leaks, and changing out parts for different parts - to see if there is any performance change from brand-to-brand parts.

I believe you only need to get the car to operating temperature - take the car for a run (10-15 minutes) then park car, let cool down a little, then retorque.
