in my opinion, it's ALWAYS necessary to have a professional tune it, to fully get all the power you can get from the setup.

All I know is my WRX runs great with an off the shelf Stage 4 Program with upgraded TMIC. I rarely see guys running any faster than my WRX with the same mods (12.7 @ 108 .6). I've been running the stage 4 setup for about 9 months with no problems at all.
Just make sure you use their HPBC instead of the ABC setup.

HPBC = High Performance Boost Controller
ABC = Auxiliary Boost Controller

HPBC = $100+ boost controller from TXS (ball and spring style)
ABC = included with Unichip/UTEC = bleeder

The difference is about .2-.4 tenths in the 1/4 mile.

The abc (auxiliary boost controller) bleeder valve setup that comes with the Turboxs kits runs through the computer. It is much slower at building boost. Boost also comes on slower and at a higher rpm. It also reduces boost at redline and tapers boost significantly. These are all saftey measures but it really holds down the power.
All the guys running real fast times are not running the abc setup.

I put my abc setup back on my car just for fun about a month ago and it was like I was driving a different car, a much slower car.

When I swithed to HPBC ( Turboxs's high performance boost controller $129) I dropped .2-.4 tenths in the 1/4 mile on average.
It makes that much of a difference. Boost comes on much faster and harder. You also make more boost at redline without as much boost taper. I've been running my HPBC for 14 months on my WRX. It was the first mod I got for my car. I haven't had any problems at all. It works really good.

The main issue would be part throttle high boost situations. An example would be going up a long steep hill at 1/3 throttle running high boost. This causes high EGTs (exhaust gas temps). It would be much better on the car/turbo to just downshift into a lower gear and haul butt up the hill. I've never had a problem. I've driven over 500 miles on the highway in one afternoon at speeds around 80 - 90mph without any problems. Like I mentioned earlier I had an HPBC on my car for 14 months already without a problem. I know guys that have used Turboxs's HPBC on their WRXs for over 30k miles without any issues.
Just watch your boost gauge and try not to drive around in high boost part throttle situatioins. Its very easy to avoid. It comes natural to me without even thinking.

It is common knowledge that the abc setup really hurts performance. When I put my abc setup back on my car I couldn't believe how much slower it was at the same boost levels. The car drove like it made 50hp less. I'm not kidding.

Nope. If you install a HPMBC the UTEC will lose the ability to control boost.

then again, one of those "people" is TurboXS, so... hehe...

Spooling time is only one small part of the picture. That ABC setup does hurt performance. Why is it that the guys running the fastest time don't use the ABC setup?

Do a test at the track. On weekend run the abc setup up down the track. Then another weekend switch to the HPBC and tell me which one works better for performance.

The difference will be measured in tenths.

And for anyone runnng a Unichip. You will easy shave .2 -.4 tenths off your 1/4 mile time by switching to the HPBC vs the ABC setup.

My WRX runs several tenths slower with the ABC setup. Yet runs 12.7 @ 108.6 with the HPBC. That with an off the shelf Stage 4 Program - unichip
Everyone I've talked to that has switched to the HPBC is like WOW. My car is much faster.
