A turbo timer, or letting the engine idle for a minute or two after parking extends the life of the turbo. Your engine pumps oil through the turbo to help cool it and of course to lubricate the moving parts. After a nice quick jaunt around the block, your turbo can get quite hot. If you just shut the car off, the oil quits moving through the turbo and can actually bake and gum up the parts in the turbo over time, which can increase the spool time and end up destroying the turbo.
Idling the car for a minute or two allows the turbo to cool a bit while oil is still being moved through it, rather then letting the oil sit.
One more comment, conventional oil is more susceptable to this than synthetic oil.
If you've got an extra $100 laying around, it's a kind of neat addition, although the comments can get a little anoying.
"Are you gunna shut your car off?" "Do you know your car is still running?" "What is that beeping? Is there a bomb in your car?"

Tricky subject here.
On one hand, yes, letting an engine cool down is always a good idea.
Other hand, our turbos are water cooled. So unless you are hitting 14psi and shutting the engine down 2 seconds later, chances are, the oil will not "bake" in it.
No, a turbo timer will not hurt, it is always a good thing. If it is, or is not overkill on our engine has yet to be proven. At least to me.
Myself, with no "proven" benefit, will not go with a timer. #1 I don't shut my engine down while "hot" #2 Even with the "Parking brake" kill switch of a turbo timer, how many people know that 99% of the time a turbo timer is wired to the parking brake? One quick snip under your car with wire cutters will disable your rear brakes, how far can I get your car in a minute or so until the motor shuts down. And yes, the factory steering wheel lock can be broke with a heavy tug on the steering wheel.
