er, yeah intakes are bad, so are aftermaket BOVs, generally unless you have lots of mods

For street use, the VF30/34 is a good choice. It gives good driveability and decent power gain for a daily driver. If you couldn't feel any difference over just a turboback exhaust with the VF34 something's not right. Could be partially explained by an aftermarket intake that isn't mapped properly by your AccessPort. Was the VF34 brand new?

Here's a car that used a 'mild' VF30 turbo and was custom dyno-tuned. Look at the trap speed for an indication of the power that even this mild turbo upgrade is capable of.

If it is a track-only car (drags or road course) you can go with a much bigger turbo when you don't have to be concerned with laggy response in daily driving.
