For those of you running 13.5 and under
What performance upgrades can I do to make my WRX quicker. I am looking to run low 13s. I have a low budget and I was wondering what I can do to get there. My thoughts were maybe a MBC or exhaust mods, are those safe? I am looking for stuff I can do I my garage but also do no harm to my car in the long run? Thanks
uppipe, underdrive pulleys, turbo back, mbc, intercooler hoses. it'd also be better if you got some sort of engine management to go along with the mods, like a unichip or reflashed ecu.
You are obviously on a tight budget so here's what you need to do. This is what I did in the very begining.
First get a manual boost controller. Turboxs sells one that works really good for $129. I've used thier boost controller for 14k miles on my car without any issues. Set your boost around 16 psi. This all by itself will put your WRX in the 13s if your a good driver.
Then as you have cash start getting exhaust pieces. The down pipe and mid pipe will make the most hp. The muffler/rear end section is mostly for sound and doesn't offer much hp gains. Then get an up pipe.
With full turboback exhaust, up pipe, and manual boost controller you can pull easy low to mid 13s if your a good driver.
Later on if you decide to upgrade your turbo you can get some sort of engine management (Unichip, UTEC, etc) These are very expensive and not necessary with the stock turbo. Others may argue but if your on a budget I would stay away from engine management at this time.
I know plenty of guys running mid 13s with just mbc's and exhaust mods. They have been running this setup for 30k miles without any problems. So this is you best setup if your on a tight budget and you want performance.

I mostly agree with SGO...
1. you'll want to invest in an EGT gauge if you are running any kind of MBC. Partial throttle full boost can be a serious problem (causes EGTs to skyrocket) leading to engine damage.
2. Many people have found that 15psi of boost is actually quicker than 16psi of boost, as your car is less likely to pull timing and over-richen the fuel mixture
If you REALLY want to save some money, just De-Cat your stock upipe. These work just as well as the fancy $300+ models... excpt for the fact that you dont have to worry about leaks.
Good luck and Happy Modding !!

stock boost is what... 13.5 psi?? so running 15-16 psi would be ok with nothing else modded? also, doesn't the boost monkey control the amount of boost regarding the partial throttle full boost issue. i read that it can set the boost not to fully build until a given throttle position, i.e. 75% depressed.

I would strongly recommend buying a free flowing(catless is the way I have chosen), turboback exhuast, and aftermarket upipe before buying an MBC and raising the boost. Also Samco IC hoses are an excellent mod as well..
the free flowing exhuast with less backpressure will reduce the chance of detonation and also reduce stress on the turbo due to less backpressure, and make the turbo/engine run more efficiently as well.
