surging then stopped..
I guess I can't complain.. I have done 100k in my 1998 gc8 and this is the first problem i have ever had. Twice in the last few days, when turning a corner from a standstill and powering up a hill it has behaved like the fuel was too low and it was starving for fuel which most do without a surge tank..only thing is it had 1/4 of a tank....tonight it did it taking off from an almost standstill at a set of lights and 15 minutes later in an 80 k zone it just started surging (full tank of fuel now) . It got so bad I had to pull off the road in case it stopped completely... it stalled, check engine and all dash lights came on. I restarted it.. rev'd it a couple of times to 5k or so and seemed ok so drove the rest of the way home with no problems..any suggestions.. My first thought was fuel filter.. It is the same one it has had since i bought it....If it was the filter...I would have thought it would be starving all the time...I have noticed a very minor hardly noticable flat spot around 2.5 -3000 rpm lately when puttering through our street... but usually only first thing in the day...

what fuel pump setup do you have in the tank (stock, sti spec-c,aftermarket)? while doing some research on surge tank setups i came across a lot of AUS people having this problem and the fix for some was to switch to a STi setup.

Well while investigating this problem.. I found 3 others ......First..aircon belt only 2 strands left..no big deal..2nd..alt/steer belt 1 strand broken.. again, no big deal..and 3rd..outside grooved edge of harmonic balance pulley has separated from rubber inner section and slid out from engine 7-8 mm... That was a pain to get off... extreeeeemly tight to get the bolt out of the cam shaft.. Got a good 2nd hand one from friendly local WRX workshop for $20 instead of $200 and a couple of belts so now that is all fixed.. I have also tested the flow out of the fuel filter and it is good. I cleaned the AFM with contact cleaner and did air filter while I had it all apart.. Air filter is a cleanable dry cotton APEXI type. It was very dirty.. Anyway all back together and going like a cut snake.. We have to wait and see if problem has gone. Next step is in tank pump filter. There may be something floating around in the tank causeing an intermittent problem..
