Yeah, me too. I'll probably be sticking with my 02 WRX. The cost of selling it and buying the STI I estimate to be about $12-15K. I could do a hell of alot of mods, as well as other things with that money!

Actually the wisest route is an older Impreza with a WRX or STI swap. Saves alot of money.

yes it will have full factory warranty, but imagine what would happen if you do one little mod to it, like a turbo timer. there goes the warranty. i wouldn't doubt that SOA will be twice or three times as strict on the warranty issue for the STi. the WRX i agree isn't as powerful or even limited than the STi will be and look at the fight they put when we just add a frickin turbo timer. i would much rather break something a bit cheaper in the WRX than the STi. therefore, i'd go for modding the WRX. many of us are basically out of the warranty thing already, may as well go the distance. also, you could probable pull some strings with damage done to the WRX, but for the STi, since it's sooo limited, don't think it'll be as easy. just a thought.

as for the modding issue, i think you could get the WRX to STi specs where it would be so close that it would depend on who's behind the wheel. well, i guess this is the main thing to begin with, the driver.

on top of the 8G for power upgrades, you guys forget about the SIX speed so call "unbeatable" gear box.

you mean "unbreakable" in what sense? if it's just to go in a straight line, powershifting, and clutch dumping, then maybe, but if we're talking about on the track, which is where these cars were made to perform, then i think a hardened gearset would be sufficient or even a dogbox, which is not nearly as expensive as the 6-speed.

rally performance has stage kits that can pretty much keep up with the STi, and costs less than 8 to 10 grand. when it comes down to it, it's all about the driver. it doesn't really matter what the car can do in a straight line, which is where many people are concerned. if that were the case, i would've gone with a supra or mustang. i'm not saying that the WRX is better than the STi, because on paper, that's just not true, however, with the right modifications, i think it can be just as good (depending on the driver) on a track on any given day against the STi.

I totally agree with you on the driver issue, cause my friend with camry V6 beat lots of people on AutoXes...
but this main argument of this thread is on how close to make a regular WRX to have a "paper" performance as a sti. so basically, yeah, it's possible, but consider all the money and reliability you've sacrificed, I personally think it's not worth it.
