STI or suped up WRX
well, in terms of reliability, we're talking about the engine, however, the question for this thread was if someone should buy the STi hunter package, which is basically for track use and doesn't really deal with engine modifications. and rally performance has tested their STi hunter package and shown that it can basically keep up with the STi on the track, where it counts more. because, handling is more important on the twisties than horsepower, although horsepower can help you but you don't need tons of horsepower, rather more low to mid power. it basically comes down to tuning after that. the other thing is that we don't really know what the true price tag on the STi is going to be. but we do know that it will msrp easily at 30 to 32 thousand. some of us got our WRX's for 10K less, but that's just speculation.

When it come to WRX vs. STi, I think there is no compatition, although there are some dibatable questions. The new STi is a WRX, which means that the US STi is a beefed up version of the 03 WRX. Now, you can mod a WRX to come almost even with the STI STOCK, but if mods are added to the STi as well, there will be no contest! But because it appears that $$$ is the issue then, I would still have to go with the STI, simply because of the resale value! If you take the resale value of both cars after the same amount of time passes, and compare that to the value of New, you will see that the STI, is far superior in that aspect, expesialy because the WRX, keep in mind, is an extensively modded one! So, the best VALUE for your DOLLAR would be the STi, but if you already own a WRX I wouldn't trade in till the STi has been on the market a Year or even Two years. And I heard at the AUTO SHOW that the Sti is going to be releasing at $42,600. But we will see!

keep in mind that regular wrx's are not neccesarily sold for msrp, (usually invoice + $xxx) when comparing it to the STI (even though we still dont have an official price yet (my guess is 32,995)(real world wrx price:$23,000 vs guess price for STI: $33,000).
That could be 10k, or more, or less could, but even with this said i would still opt for a 04 STI.difference. How could you go wrong with that setup and a warranty. And in this case i would pretty much leave it stock for the most part (give or take some small mods to fine tailor the car to individual tastes).
I vote new sti over modded wrx.
good luck

Have you considered how much money you are going to lose on your WRX? Most seem to be going for about 16-17K. Add to that the cost differential of the STI and you could be takling 16-18 grand difference. For 4 thousand you can have 360+ hp (TurboXS stage 4, Vishnu stage 2, etc). Add a couple of grand for a good suspension setup, a couple grand for wheels and tires and you will beat up on stock STIs and still have 8 grand to play with. Put 4 grand into one of Cobb tunings shortblock/head upgrades, a grand or so into brakes, and another 4 grand into a 6MT swapout and you will compete with tuned STIs - for what it will cost you to get into the stock STI.
Now if you were comming into the Subaru market new buying a STI over a WRX is a no brainer.

In my case i went with an 04 WRX because of the tunability concept. I love working on my cars. the WRX offers more options to individualize my car and when tuned i can be proud of my accomplishment instead of "what i bought". This is what influenced my decision the most. but i will tell you also the STi is well woth the money. almost no turbo lag and plenty of mechanicle noise to tell you what is going on in the car. if you are planning on reselling the car then buy the STi since you will have to invest less to be happy. I like to keep my investments however.
