Questions..HELP!!
I am going to out of town for three weeks tomorrow. My last oil change was 2000 miles ago. Should I disconnect the battery and if so which terminal (or both) should I disconnect. I always thought your supposed to disconnect the negative one but my friend insists its the positive one. Also should I change my oil before I leave? Is it best to change the oil when the engine is hot or should I wait 6 hours and change it when its cold? Should I even change it before I leave?

it is much easier to change oil when it is warm/hot because the oil is thinner and flows faster. usually i disconnect my negative terminal. so why do you think you need to change your oil right now?

I just figured it would be better for the car to have fresh oil sitting in it for when I get back. I thought oil becomes heavier/thicker when it is warm. For example, a 10-50 is 10 weight when its cold and 50 weight when its hot. I figure if you change the oil when it has sat for at least 6 hours all of it has drained into the oil pan rather than a half a quart of dirty oil sitting on parts which will dirty new oil. Any mechanics want to tackle this because I am not really sure.

The oil is thinner when hotter.
The "W" rating is just a different scale. It doesn't stand for "weight" it stands for WINTER.
Look here:

That being said I like to change oil when it's warm also.

A SAE30 oil takes 58-70 seconds to fill the flask at 210F,
an SAE40 oil takes 70-85 seconds, and
an SAE50 oil takes 85-110 seconds.
There is also a test for low-temperature viscosity that is designated by a "W" suffix on the SAE viscosity rating.
A SAE5W oil takes less than 6000 seconds to fill the flask at 0F.
An SAE10W oil takes 6000-12000 seconds, and
an SAE20W takes 12000-48000 seconds.
