Questions about Gutting a Downpipe Verse a Aftermarket Catless Downpipe

Hey guys,

I had a questions concerning a gutted stock DP verse a catless aftermarket DP.

The thing is cops in my city are super strict about modified cars and pull you over for anything just the check your car out. Because of this i do not want to buy a catless DP and get caught with it, since it makes it so much louder.

So i was thinking about getting a stock DP and having it gutted out...the DP and third catt.

My question is will this really make a differance, and is it as good as a catless DP?

Thanks for your help

Will

Gutted stock DP - Pros & Cons:

Pros
-Stealth
-Free
-Louder
-Will add hp
-Good for stock turbo
-FREE

Cons:
-Added work to do (PITA)
-Limited upgrade path, 2.5" wouldnt be ideal for bigger turbo

IMO, if you have the time/tools/energy to gut the stock cats go for it! Im running a gutted uppipe, WELL worth it Just wear some kind of mask, you dont want to breath in catalitic smog dust!!!

If you ever need to go back to stock, you'll have to find another stock downpipe.

The reason Why i would not gutt out my stock DP is cuz the bends are still crapy and not as smooth as any aftermarket DP.

you are correct. but when 1 you have no money to pay about 250 to 300 for a catted DP, and cant afford to get pulled over and get caught with a catless DP you kinda have to resort to what i need to do, and thats gutt a stocker.

In your stock downpipe, "mouth" design and downpipe diameter are the restrictions, not the cats. Of course given CATLESS OEM downpipe will flow better than CATTED OEM downpipe, but you would gain more if you had OEM-like catted downpipe with better "mouth" design and 3".

Please also remember, that "gutting" cats is extemely dangerous for your health. If you do deside to do it, please wear a proper mask to protect yourself from all that nasty stuff the cats are made from.

I would advise your to purchase a quality aftermarket downpipe. Catted if you prefer to stay on the more "legal" path.

What I am trying to say, is that I personally would not bother with catting the downpipe. The horse power you gain will be very small and you can gain that power by doing something more traditional. Its just not worth it. Amount of work you are going to do is more than if you were to install an aftermarket pipe.

Keep your eyes open for used downpipes. They are getting cheaper everyday.

Yeah you are probably correct. I wont be doing the gutting myself, someone else will so i dont have to worry about that. Just have to worry about the gains. you are correct as well, power gains wont be much but its still better then stock. I guess i should just wait and maybe find a Invidia catted DP on here or ebay for cheap. Then i get the bellmouth and 3 inch.
