Question Painting the intake manifold?

The Impreza is totally getting rebuilt for the last time and I want to paint up some engine parts. I was wondering can the intake manifold be painted and should anything be taped off?

Yes, you can paint the intake manifold. Don't paint the throttle body, any rubber hoses or vacuum lines, or any electrical wiring or connectors. Don't let paint get into the area where the fuel injectors are installed. Paint contains solvents which might damage those components.

Obviously, better results will be had by removing the intake manifold from the engine before painting. Leaving it installed on the engine means a lot more work masking things off and trying to avoid overspray that might get on your fenders or other exterior surfaces. An air brush and compressor would probably do a nicer job of painting but I don't own one myself so no specific recommendations.

Another thing that can be done to prep the intake manifold is to thoroughly clean the surface of any grease, oil, or contaminants, so the paint can adhere properly. You might have some method in mind already but I might just use plain old mild detergent, hot water, and a scrub brush, then rinse well before allowing to dry (inside and out) completely.

If the painting job goes the way you like, feel free to post up pics.
