Yep,
I have had this problem also. Took it two three different dealers and they said it is normal. However i don't believe them. Within the next week i am going to do a compression check just to see where i stand. I am going to be changing the spark plugs so i figure i might as well do it then.
Some say that if you used synthetic in the early miles of the car (~6000), the rings may not have sitted properly. I started using synthetic around that time.
I have about 20,000 miles on my car.

I have not noticed any smoke coming from the exhaust. However it is hard to tell why you are driving. If i am it is not enough that i would see by just looking back through my mirrors.
I have checked when i start the car in the morning. No smoking at all.

Just for the record,
My wife and I had a 94 Saturn wagon that burned about a quart every 2000 miles (at least) and we were told its "normal"..........Bullsh*t!!
They say "newer cars run hotter"
BUT, My 89ChevyGTU never burned ANY oil, Even when I would screw up and run it 1-2000 miles OVER on oil changes!
I would do the compression check and if it dont come up within 10% of spec, Start in on their *****!!

This is exactaly the poor service that I have come to expect from subie dealers
Yeah loosing oil is normal if you don't have a drian plug in the oil pan
I not dissing on all subie dealers just all the dealers that I have had dealings with.
Please report back with your findings You could check and see how much oil has made it's way to the intercooler, some is normal very little thought
I switched to synthetic at 2700 miles with no problems what weight and brand oil are you running? I have hear somthing about redline oils dissapearing from subie engines

hey that's the same oil I run
the subaru manual says to warm uo the engine then with the throttle open and at 350 rpm you should get between 138-166psi
121psi being minimun spec and no more than 7psi between cylinders.
I have not done a compression test on a subie but I have done many never caring weather the engine was warm or if the throttle was open mainly you look for the number of times the needle bounces and the diff between cyls
does that make any sense?
Robert

Is it a quart from the low to the max? I just realized that i have never used a full quart to bring it up all the way again.
Maybe one quarter of a quart. If it is a full quart to go from the low mark to the max mark, why am i able to top off with less than a quart?
I am still going to do a compression check this thursday.

I don't gave any of my car books or my car here so I'm not 100% but I would think that 1QT is right for low to high.
have you had someone ride be hide you? to see when and if your car smokes?

dont need a tsb work on cars for a livin and know the norms, not every subaru will use the same amount of oil, depends on drivin habits, maintenance schedules, etc.i'll be replacing a short block in a 00 isuzu trooper for excessive oil consumption.it was using a quart every 500 miles. #4 cyl was the worst on pressure and leakage test. if u have a serious complaint the dealer has to do an oil consumption test for 2000 miles. u get the oil changed and then come in every 500 miles and they check it and topp off if necessary, and if u dont believe in the numbers as far as oil consumption--ask the dealer--they'll show u a copy-i know i work at a subaru dealership.and i have an 03 impreza 2.5rs that i absolutely love.
